removing pedal cluster

Got a question about the procedure as this is my first time...before I disconnect the clutch cable from the arm in the tunnel, should I loosen it at the transmission? The Bentley manual suggests this procedure, but Wayne makes no mention of it in his book. It's already adjusted perfectly so I hate to start messing with it if I don't have to. TIA.

yes, remove the cable from the arm under the trans. leave both the brake pushrod and the flat bar on the cluster as you remove it. just detach them at the top. before disassembling the cluster, make a scratch mark on the cluster housing so you can line up the flat bar at the proper angle for easy reassembly into the car.

Thanks John. One other question - is there a trick to getting the big clutch pedal return spring on/off, or do I need to hire a gorilla?

leave it on for the removal. remember the direction the hook attaches to the pedal. on reassembly, hook it to the pedal first, then pry it over the front knob with a carefully centered screwdriver, or better yet, a standard brake tool used for installing springs on brake shoe cars. it looks like a rod with a cup cut out of it's side, so it hooks onto the knob and then when pulled, the spring slides along it and pops over the knob.
