Unhappy High Beams come on randomly

About a month ago I started noticing that my high beams would come on if I just very lightly touched the turn signal/high beam stalk, say for example when turning on my blinker. What a pain in the arse. Irritating as heck for me and no doubt the drivers in front of me as they think I'm flashing them for no valid reason.

Have any of you guys experienced this and if so, is it a simple fix or do I need a replacement turn signal/high beam stalk assembly?

Hey Scott, Thats a really common problem. Your Hi/Low beam/ turn signal switch is failing. The replacement part # is 911 613 305 01
I'm sure our host here sells them. Not a real pain to replace. Takes about an hour if you're a first timer.

Its a very easy fix- you may not need a new switch yet. I went through this a year ago.

You just need to 'reshape' a contact slightly (unless the thing is totally fried- in which case you may need to replace). No need to remove the switch to fix the contact.

I remember a couple of pretty big threads on the issue... will try & search them out for you.

I had the same problem. My cheap fix when it first started was folding some paper and inserting in the space behind the turn signal stock. This rendered the high beams useless except for pull flash.
This worked for a couple years until the contacts wore out too much. Finally replaced the turn signal switch.

I've read where people have taken the switch apart and did something with the contact but as long as I had to remove the thing, I decided to replace it.
It's a pretty easy job. The part is just a little expensive.

I just did this a couple of weeks ago (see the above links). Based on the advice I got from this board, I fixed the exact problem you are having. If you haven't already, install the Sucro (or similar) relays to prevent full voltage going through the switch.
Cheers,

Mike

Thanks Mike. The Sucro kit was the first of many, many repairs/mods I have done to this car since I got it 1 1/2 years ago.
