Pardon my ignorance but what is a DME?

Is the the ECU? I know it stands for digital motor electronics is it a separate unit from the ECU? I looked on google but it tied it with the ECM/DME and I always thought the ECM=ECU. Porsche education needed.

Digitale Motorelektronik (German) = Digital Motor Electronics

Its the same as ECU or ECM or whatever else it out there to describe the computer than runs the spark and the fuel injectors.

DME also specifically refers to the engine management system of later-model 911's. Prior to DME, the engine management system was called CIS (Continuous Injection System). I think CIS was introduced in 1973.5. DME was introduced in 1984 (though turbo models continued to use CIS until the 993TT?).

OR in a Porsche/Mooney it could be a piece of nav gear used "paired-up" with your VOR signal.....hehe
