I played around with that a while back. You have to be very good at the CAD software to get something right, and if you order something, it is expensive in low numbers.
I tried to make a simple aluminum part before i realized how much it was going to cost and the fact that given my limited skills, it probably wouldnt fit. Paul

Yeah, me too, tried to make some brackets for mounting 84 carrera calipers on a vdub front ent (the spyder), and the part would have been $300 ea (roughly). I mocked them up in wood, and a local machine shop made them on a bridgeport for around 75$ for two, materials included. They were just a bar of aluminum with some depressions and some radiused holes, nothing fancy.

I have used them. The parts came out well and they seemed very competent, emailing me to make sure there was no confusion about some of the dimensions. The software was a little difficult to used but after going through their tutorial it wasn't too bad, but I also had a good deal of experience with solid modeling so I don't know what the learning curve would be like with no experience. It is expensive for 1 part but if you want more the price drops quickly. For one door trigger it would cost over 200 but 30 were less than 20 each. Also after you get a quote they give you tips on reducing the cost. You can also try different materials and shapes to get it as cheap as possible. They will also powdercoating or anodizing among other finishes for practically nothing. I think it ended up being less than a dollar per part to powdercoat.
Shameless plug, I have some of these on ebay for sale if anyone needs one. 8035539509 There are also more pictures there if you want to check out the workmanship, which I think is excellent. |
