Help with a 1974 911 Engine Serial Number
 

Is the location of the engine serial number the same on all 911 motors?
I need help locating the serial number on a 1974 911 CIS engine. I told the current owner to look on the right side of the fan on the vertical support for the number.
He told me the area is blank with no serial number present.


1) is this the proper area to look for this year?
2) if it is, what would it mean if there was no serial number?

The only engine cases I've seen without a serial number are replacement cases from the factory. The dealer was expected to punch in the original engine number I believe.

look at the area again and check for a type number. The type number is located on the horizontal section just below where the serial number would be on the engine block. The numbers would be approx 4 mm tall with an arrangement similar to 911/83 . Is there one on the engine you are considering?
Now this is a trick question; if there are type numbers there with no numbers on the alternator support vertical area, then the engine block has been altered. Some one has removed the serial # to the engine ! Type #'s are assigned by the factory once it is determined what style engine is being assembled. Replacement blocks come blank in both areas.

I will leave you to draw your own conclusions as to why some one removes a number

If that pic is where the guy has been looking ... it is the wrong area! Look further back and higher, like this:

Be sure to rub both areas with a shop rag saturated with a good degreasing cleaner ... back and forth, to loosen those years of dust accumulated!

Warren - Please look again at the photo. I think I am looking in that same exact spot.
From the photo, you can not see the serial number at all.
The "Type" is not visible in the photo.

So basically it comes down to the question "why no serial number"

What I see is a pic with the bolt threads of the crossmember in focus, and very little else [in focus] anywhere in the shot, since the camera wasn't aimed at the right area ... try a bit of cleaner on those two areas ... if it was a replacement case, the numbers will be very light compared to factory-stamped numbers, and the stamp set may have been smaller numbers!

Well, TRE already gave you the answer as to why the numbers might be missing ... a low-compression, base 2.7 isn't worth much if fully-documented, and certainly wouldn't be worth going to jail for if there was a paper trail to a police report!

If the deal seems too good to be true, it probably isn't!
