how do you remove the rear valence/bumper pads?
 

I have an 86 Carrera that I'm pulling the engine/trans out of. I can't seem to get the lower valence off. I'm guessing there are screws under the rubber bumper pads, but I can't get those off either. Any help is appreciated.

The lower valence is screwed to the bottom of the rear bumper. There is nothing attaching the valence to the rubber pads.

I have the screws out and it's still hanging up there pretty securly, should I just tug on it?

Valance might just be stuck to the milding piece. The bumper needs to be removed to remove the pads.

I pulled mine off a few weeks ago and it came off easily. BUT there were screw holes in the valence where it slid between the bumper and pad. Looked to me like it came from the factory with screws under there. Can't you check with your hand? Ken

I removed mine also recently along withtthe pads. There are screws on the ends of the valance that attached to the bellows. Those may be why it is hanging up. Also, I didn't remove the bumper to take off the pads aka garage beer break seats although it is easier to do it with the bimper off the car. Ultimately I did remove the bumper to clean all the grease and crap out of it.

There are screws under the rubber bumperettes. You have to remove the ettes first to get the lower valence off. When I replaced my lower valence I left the screws under the bumperettes out so I wouldn't have to remove the ettes every time.

You might as well just remove the whole bumper, along with the valence and everything else. Uncrew the tag lights, pull them out and disconnect the wires. Pull them through the front of the bumper. Remove the nuts holding the bellows to the bumper on each side. Remove the plug in the impact strip on each side and remove the screws underneath. Pull the impact strip back to expose the nuts holding the bumper to the shocks and remove them. Pull the bumper off.

Javadog is right unless you have a midwestern car that was exposed to alot of snow and water. I pulled my bumpers off two years ago and had big probelms removing the lower rear valance because the screws were frozen with rust. For some reason Porsche threaded the bottom of the bumper (aluminum) and used steel screws which react and are murder to remove. I had to take the bumper with valance to the shop (where they painted) it to have it removed. DOn't force anything or you will have to replace more parts than you intended and use an antiseize grease to stop future problems on aluminum parts.

I got the valence and bumperettes off - I did find the screws behind the ettes. I have to look closer at how to get the whole bumper off now, the car isn't high enough to get the engine through! Javadog, I will look for the plugs in the impact strips so I can get them off to get the bumper off the shocks. I was trying to get the shocks off the fram and having very little luck - thanks for the tips everybody!
