New Leather on my seats! WOW!

Finally got my seats recovered. They were in extremely bad shape. Driver's seat leather was torn and worn through on both the seat bottom and backrest. Lots of dried up cracking on both seats. considered dying, but the needed repairs were substantial, and I thought it would look like crap in no time if I went that route. Had new covers installed in German leather matching exactly the original color and materials (GAHH). It was expensive, but I love the outcome.

Thanks, guys. Total cost came to $1560. That broke down to about $1200 for the covers, $250 for installation, and about $100~ in sales tax. That's the reason I hesitated doing it for so long. Now I wish I had done it years ago. I had a crappy sheepskin cover on the driver's seat, and just got used to it. I'm going to install the seats tonight or tomorrow, and I'll post some pics after they're in the car.

Mike--
Congratulations - those look great! I had my seats totally redone several years ago - made all the difference in the look of the interior and my enjoyment of the car.
Now go out and drive it!

Yes, it's a Weissach. The inserts on the new covers are perforated, just like the original. The pics didn't pic up the perfs too well. The perforations also don't stand out as much when they're not stuffed with dirt and 25 years of butt rubbing.

Wow Mike - that's excellent! Price sounds right, considering what you got. Can we assume you're keeping the car too?

Well, I had ideas about selling it soon, but I'm definitely having second thoughts now. It's amazing the diffence the seats make in the car. They're not installed in the car yet, but just having them sitting in the car makes the entire interior, and thus the whole car, much more appealing. I've been thinking about a 993 for a few months now. I think I'll come to a decision soon.

Wow- those look good. The perfs can be seen in the pics now that you mention them.

Judging from your initial response to just having them near the car (much less in it) I would wager your money was well spent.

yeah, i've been debating for years whether i'm going with the german vinyl or leather. since i plan on keeping the car till they plant me, i'm thinking leather is a good investment. isn't it true that you sweat more on vinyl than leather? another benefit. i would have done this years ago were my tan sheepskins not truly comfortable and particularly great in winter.

Wow! Gorgeous and worth the price!

If you think they lasted 25 years with the previous owners... your new seat leather should last an easy 40 if you take care of them!

Those look great.

You made the right choice. The old ones were too far gone to dye.

Before you install, double check the latch on the side to make sure it releases the bottom lock so it will tilt forward. It's much harder to fix once you've installed them. Speaking from past experience.

Aside from repair (I've re-sewn one and plan to do the same to the other.....they're not that trashed even though my car has well over a quarter-million miles), the only thing I am interested in doing to my seats is to replace them with units that weigh 80% less and do a better job of keeping me from sliding into the passenger seat at autocross. Those darned things are slippery boat-anchors.
