Is the door handle on the outside stuck? The striker you press when opening a car or maybe the inside handle is now stuck. Does the locking mechanism on the latch just swing back and forth or is it stuck into one position? Need more information....

Hi,

the door handle is not stuck, it opens and closes.

The round part that rotates on the end of the door spins freely but does not click into place when it strikes the plate on the car.

good thing your driving, and not in that seat!!!

Open the door, and then slide a screwdriver into the gate on the door, does it release? Did this just arise, or always been that way? My guess is you lost a spring. lemme look for a pic.

With the door open can you push against the latch mechanism to make the latch close as if it hit the striker plate. If you can then you need to adjust the striker plate. If you cant get the latch to close then you have a problem with that mechanism. I had both my doors completely apart for a restoration and I spend about a half a day just getting the latch mechanism aligned so the doors would latch closed and sit flush with the body.

Make sure the inside door opener pull handle is flush to where it should stop against the arm rest. If not, push it in.

My door handle action was very stiff and the inside pull would be about 1/4 of an inch from not returning to flush when opening the door and the door would not close until it was pushed in.

On-Ramp,

I recently had this problem, everything seemed to be working,
but door would'nt latch shut, after adjusting Striker plate on the main body door recess, up, down, in, and out with no success, I found I needed to put an extra shim under the striker plate, this fixed it. the striker plate has a shim as standard, mine need a bit extra,
see part number in the Pelican catalogue.

I had similar problem with my '86 Carrera...found out the window weather strip was shrinking from too much sun and allowing rain water to enter the locking mechanism...the whole thing was rusted. I had to disassemble the door, remove the screws in the door holding the lock and clean the lock and replace several parts. The lock can be expensive but you can bring it back with oil and grease. If you are going to fix it replace the weatherstrip along the window and check the felt strip that holds the window.

My passenger door also has difficulty latching only in COLD weather. I will try the shim!
