Painting an SC a diff color....Bad idea/$$?
 

I have found a nice SC for sale which has a color I feel is most undesirable (forest green). Would painting it black be a bad idea and expensive? I would want a higher quality paint job in Porsche's black color. What am I looking at in price to do this? All thoughts much appreciated.

I priced out paint for my car and it was all over the board as low as $2500 and as high as $7500, in the end I chickened out, my fear was to get stuck with a low quality job. This isn't something you want to shop around for. And with a color change you have a lot more work.

I did a color change on my car from brown to Bali Blue. I did it right, but it's a lot of work, and money. IMHO, forest green is a superb color. But if you haven't bought it yet, why not just keep looking for a car you like as is?

Forest green is a rare and excellent color. Keep it as is.

Agreed. I think a color change is both $$$ and a bad idea (color change = lowered value), and risky to boot. No matter how good a job, there will always be reminders that you're not dealing with the original color unless you COMPLETELY strip the car, and that is BIG bucks, time, and you had better be really sure of your painter; you'll be hard-pressed to find a painter who can even approach the factory paint quality.

Take sushinav's advice and find a car in a color you like.

I would not do this. Very expensive to do it right. Lowers the value of the car.

It's easier to keep shopping. There is plenty of SCs in nice colors. A good paint job will be 5k (ballpark). That's half to a third of the value of the car. And if the current paint is nice, it really would be a waste!

Yeah, I am 100% sure I made a mistake. I went from Black Metallic to THIS! :rolleyes: I am sure the value of my car is in the toilet now. Why buy something if you are worried about how much it will be when you sell it? That's the wrong mindset, IHMO, of course.

Thank you gentleman for your knowledgable opinions! Here's what the problem is....
I've been looking for a black/black SC in original, v.good condition for over a year now. I've run across a couple fine examples and the owners want $20k and $23k, respectively, without any upgrades being performed. Both cars have ~60k miles on them. I have been looking all over the net and cannot find that special one and now I have lost any interest in buying an SC.....until two nights ago when I saw a black tail-less SC at a traffic light making a turn and zooming off with that awesome Porsche resonance. And here I am again! I have yet to find a car that draws me like these older Porsches. The search goes on....

This is the problem everyone has when looking for a used 911. Just keep looking and be patient and the right car will come along. You'll know it when you see it. $20k is too much to pay for a 60k SC.

If you're looking for original I'd say the max is about $20k for a time warp concours SC. That's just my opinion. Here's mine, all stock, 28k orig. miles:

I love green cars. Someday I'd like to do a color change on my ivory SC to Oak Green Metallic. I love that color.

Mine was originally oak green and the PO painted it a similar but not Porsche color. I think it was a ford color. Not the same - believe me.

I went to Irish green. I love the color now, but it did require a respray of the jams and various nooks and crannies. I don't think it reduced the value any. My advice is get the color you like best, but stay with a Porsche color. If you do a color change, be prepared for all the extra work to get it done right.

I must admit too, (as I am sure that you do not want to hear this) take the time and find one that you really want. Before I finally made a purchase, I too was very close to a couple of SCs and Carreras that were in the $20K range but then pulled out at the last minute. For some reason the timing was not right. I know I probably angered more than one seller, but I wanted to be sure that it was exactly the one I wanted. The hummin, hawin, and tire kickin, actually went on for 3+ years until I came across the 911 I now own. As soon as the PO took the car cover off, I knew that it was the right one. Also the fact that I bought it for less than 1/2 of all of the others that I had looked at over the years, too had helped.
Simply stated, take your time and buy the one that you really like, that way you will have no regrets.

green is good. try to find another one that color, then youll realize how rare that color is. there is a green one right around my part of town. some older lady drives it with her dog in the front seat. every time is see it i stare. point being, i think green is cool on a 911

A while back, someone posted a pic of their car and I saved it because I love the color. I have no idea whose car it is. I think this green is one of the most attractive colors I've seen on a 911.

The color will grow on you. Black 911s are common.

Black SCs look great when they are clean, but they only stay clean for 5 minutes, less if you drive it ;)

I think that green early 911 with the frosted petals might belong to pwd72. Real pretty car,
