Help with 911 engine electrics

I have the engine 1973 2.4 MFI ready to install in my 1971 VW pickup and need some help. I have the plate with all the relays/cds ignition and I think voltage regulator on it. I see a 14 pin connector on the engine and on the board simple and a single wire connector from engine and on board. OK so far. There is a 3 wire connector from engine and one on CDS unit along with a ground OK I have that figured out. There are 2 2 wire connectors on the bottom of CDS board I have no idea where they go. On the engine is a Big Red wire figure it goes to starter no problem there On the same end of the Starter Wire is a female spade connector with 2 wires on it (for starter?) also half way down that wire from engine is a male and female spade connector have no idea where they go. Now for the big question how/where do you hook up the hot wire from ignition switch? I have looked at the wiring diagrams in the Haynes manual and gone blind. So if there is a better manual with better wiring diagrams PLEASE point me to it. Or if anybody has the answers I would be very thankful

The second part of my question is did the early (prior to 1973) have power brakes? If so where does the vacuum line come from?

thank you
Kerry

Kerry-
No brake booster was used on 911s until the CIS years. As for the wires, see if you can get your hand on a factory manual. It has color diagrams that are pretty good. Alternatively, if you post a picture of the wires it would be easier for folks to answer your question.

Someplace there must be a wire from the ignition switch to the CDS unit but I just don't see it. On a standard ignition system the wire from ignition switch goes to + side of coil and to the fuel pump. Then when key is turned power goes to starter solenoid the engine spins and voila it runs. So I need to see how to get power to CDS system so when key is turned on there is spark

Thank you
Kerry

Kerry,

The 1971 schematic below is identical to the '73 regarding the engine ...

The switched CDI power is from the bus at the 3-fuse block.

One of the connectors circled with heavy red wires is for the rear window defogger grid, so I guess you won't need it!

The second pic ... one of the small leads [close to starter ] is for the oil pressure sender or switch [if it was a 911T engine with base gauge package] ... two leads closer to MFI pump are for the Thermo-Time Switch.

gosh now I am more confused someplace the wire from the ignition switch has to connect to this

are there 2 14 pin connecting wires one from engine and one from body? It appears that all I need on this piece is the cds unit and the regulator for the alternator. maybe it would be better to remove it from this board. The MFI is all mechanical no electrical current needed? Is that correct?

Thanks
Kerry

Kerry,

Actually, there is a significant portion of that panel dedicated to MFI ... for the cold-start system, and the overrun fuel cutoff system!

I suggest taking a look at Pelican's MFI Tips page:

http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/911_MFI/TipMFI.htm

A better copy of Check, Measure, Adjust is available at:

http://www.scatliff.mb.ca/pelican/MFI_Check_Measure_Adjust.pdf

The schematic I posted above shows the heavy Red switched power coming into the forward [right-hand 14-pin connector] body connector on pin #13, and the Yellow starter solenoid lead on pin #1.

I think after going blind it that there is another 14 pin connector that hooks up to the left side of the board and this is where all the wires eg: oil pressure oil temp, battery from ign switch wire for alt charging light get from engine/board to body. I will have to get the 14 connector wire from someplace and wire that to the VW wireing loom. I think now that iti is at least clear as mud.

thanks for the help

Kerry

one 14 pin connectr is seen at teh bottom in your pic

on my '73, the other is sideways at what would be the Left end of the pic (rear of the body)

Kerry,

'73 models didn't have power brakes, but some did need vacuum for the Sportomatic clutch actuation ...

Here is a shot from the parts catalog [downloadable from Porsche web site] detailing the vacuum system connection to the left hand manifold:
