Sucessful Brake System rebuild

Just finished the following:
Rebuild all 4 calipers
bead blast & paint calipers
replaced rear brake rotors and pads
bead blast and painted front hubs
Replaced all 4 rubber brake lines
Replaced master cylinder
Replaced Front wheel bearings.
Bead blasted and painted Lug nuts

Started last Monday and finished up Today, Saturday.
On Thursday CarerraDan Stopped by and helped me for a while. I was impressed by his knowledge of these cars and his willingness to help.

The job as a whole was pretty straight forward, there were a few tense moments trying to get the master cyl out, I did not know that the master cyl and the pedal cluster were joined together by a flat metal rod.

The bleeding procedure went fairly well, just a little messy. I bled the whole system about 3 times to insure that all the old fluid was removed. I used a mity vac for the bleeding.

The most impressive thing of all is..........the brakes actually work now. It stops straight and the left front caliper no longer drags when I take off.

Well now my confidence is up....but my bank account is down

What will be the next project?

Here's a few pic's of the weeks work, I would have taken more but the camera work was getting in my way

Jackin it up from the side

Front Jackstand placement

Front caliper Before

Calipers after bead blasting

Front after

the caliper paint looks real good now, but I'm not sure how long it hold up because I used a cheap caliper paint from pepboys $15 next time I'll go for powder coating.

Rear after

The finished product

Did you have a hard time getting the rear rotors off?
I just started my brake upgrade today. I have the front apart and cleaned. There are two slot head screws holding the rears on, right?
Thanks,

Wayne, I just took my rear rotors off last night since I was in there anyway. Usually it helps if you take a hammer and smack the heads of the phillips screws once or twice before trying to remove them with a screw driver. A little anti-seize goes a long way on the install.

KC thanks for the heads up on line wrench sizes for the brake line change. Managed to get them all off without doing too much damage. Had to replace the hard lines that go from the calipers to the flexible lines on all four corners.

FWIW, the pedal is much better with new hoses installed. I guess that 24 years is long enough for rubber hoses to be on a car.

Wayne, the rotors were no problem to get off. I used an impact driver (you smack it with a hammer) to loosen the screws.

I replaced the rotors rather than have them turned because the last I had rotors turned they screwed them up.

My car has no rust on it anywhere I can find, so some of the problems with stuck/rusted fasteners and frozen parts hasn't been a problem for me.

Thanks guys.
I am replacing all 4 rotors, the rubber lines, and rebuilding my front calipers. Oh, and new struts while I'm in there.
Curious why you didn't go with cross-drilled or slotted for the new rotors.
I am still debating on which ones I will use.

Good job. That is on my list of things to do and your post and pictures have given me some much needed focus. Thanks!

How do you go about bead blasting the calipers?

I am rebuilding mine and I used a whole can of brake cleaner on one caliper and only about 1/4 of the caliper looks clean.

Thanks.

Guys,
I enjoyed meeting KC on Thursday, we talked much more than we worked. I was sorry to miss the master cylinder replace but I had to go and visit the girlfriend. KC, I am glad you were able to get everything put back together and I think it is always nice to be able to feel a difference. I should have all my parts by the end of the week if you wanna stop by.

PS, Sododave, KC has access to a bead blaster at work, he plugged all the holes on the caliper and blasted all that junk right off.
