Question Rear shock bolts

Any auggestions on how to loosen the lower mounting bolts on the rear shocks? I have tried kroil followed by 600ft/lbs impact wrench but they won't budge.

A good 6 point box end wrench and a floor jack?

i just did this. i abused my half inch ratchet. i just used my jack handle for extra leverage. helps to life the car up higher, so you can stand.

Thumbs up

Yeah, a floor jack should work. I'll have to hunt down a 22mm box end wrench since my sockets only go up to 19mm not counting the deep impact ones.

My car is jacked up with the engine/trans out. There should be plenty of room to maneuver I'm currently repacking the cv's; what a nasty job!

Hey vash, did you get new shocks?

Thanks, jt

You'll need a 6 point boxed end or socket, use a breaker bar and a piece of pipe.

That did it for me.

Use a good quality 6-point impact socket and an equally hefty breaker bar. This is not the time to round off the corners of the bolt head or create secondary damage if the socket should fracture. I too would recommend some Kroil/PB Blaster and heat on the bolt boss on the arm.

Make sure the kroil is applied between the aluminum arm and the shock body..AND also under the outside bolt head..... both places...give it a whack...but wait thereafter about 24 hrs for the actual "push" to get it off....needs time and vibration

Might be hard to find, but a six-point 22 mm 3/4" drive socket on a breaker-bar and a five-foot extension pipe would be my weapon of choice!

If that doesn't work ... it is time to remove that control arm from the car! Degrease the bolt head and surrounding shock eyelet, then submerge the arm, eylet, and bolt head in 9% pickling vinegar ... bringing vinegar to near-boiling temp a few times [4 - 6 hour intervals] ... and let sit overnight to soak at rust & corrosion. Put eyelet/arm in large, secure bench vise with leather/cardboard to protect surfaces, then twist away with five-foot pipe extension on breaker-bar!!!

What worked for me was socket, Craftsman half in bar, and the handle from a large floor jack as a cheater over the end of the bar.
