911/912 Steering Rack Identification
I was wondering if any one can actually identify this steering rack.
it is an early rack but not sure what from as it doesn't have the steering shaft housing. Here are some pictures and I look forward to what people think. Graeme ![]()

Looks like the same as in my "MY '66" 911 and may also be in the '67 cars as well. The date code on the your tag is 7/65, one month newer then mine. I'm not familiar with the terms "bulkhead boot/ garter"

Hi
thats a great start. The seal/cover/garter I am looking for is the one that seperates the cabin from the steering rack. |

Lower steering shaft bellow
Hi
This link is a start however the enlarged boss is needed for this to fit the rack I have doesn't have provision for this. http://www.*************/shop/shopexd.asp?id=2614 Also I note this rack has 57mm of travel for on revolution of the steering wheel which from my calculation makes it a 2.5 turn from stop to stop. is this the same as later ones? |

Unfortunately not
I think I am chasing a red herring so to speak.
I think the very early 911 912 cars didn't have a cover over the flex drive into the rack. I will confess this rack is not going back in an early 911. can some one post the link to the assembly of this series of rack. It is quite a different assembly than I have found on other posts. The Main difference is the large threaded catelated adjustmeant piece. When this is screwed up lightly, there is either play in the rack to pinion but when tightened there is a definite "center" notch on the the rack. There is some wear in the assembly but this notch fells more than were almost like its meant to be there. Does any one have any ideas. Cheers Graeme |

After reassembling this rack, it has 2.5 turns from lock to lock which in travel of 57 mm per turn.
Is this a standard rate or is it a quick rack? |
