Engine drop step by step with a G50
Hi all, I had to pull my engine out of my Carrera yesterday to revisit a valve problem and thought I would take some step by step pictures of the process of pulling the engine and transmission out. I was talking to Brandon, aka 87 Coupe about the lack of G50 information out there for the do it your selfers, so here is some step by step info for ya.

Awesome write up! Us G50 boys definitely appreciate it ;) Some of the nuances of our cars are easily missed if your going off a 915 drop procedure.

As you said, everybody yaks about 915 cars endlessly, but seldom about G50s.

Thank you for the kind words. I know alot of you out there are do it your selfers and sometimes the information available is sketchy at best. If this helps any one of you then it really makes my day! I sometimes take it for granted that I do this every day of my life.
I pulled the engine down to the point where the rods were sticking out of the case. I am probably going to pull a couple rods out to see how the bearings look. From there.... who knows. :D |

yeah i guess. the lifting of the car and access to the dropping and retrieving of engine is the hard part. you have a lift in your shop you lucky devil.
- try it like the rest of us serfs with just a funky jack in the backyard over a mud hole with nothing but cardboard, fate and a old 2x4, plywood and a old mattress for a drop back up! great photo layout though! regards antares fatnwide |

If you've got any other photos of the back side of the engine, could you please post a link ? I'm looking to compare / confirm hookups of the various pipes, hoses and tubes back there. Appreciate it. Great job, and please keep the rebuild photos coming ! |

I talked to the machinist today and got the news. Three exhaust valve guides went away big time. Its a real mystery as to why. I cleaned the cam spray bars out when I put it together. We can't seem to put our finger on why three guides went out. The camshafts, rockers, and rocker shafts were brand new as well and they look fantastic. When I looked at the valve to valve seat mating surfaces, they looked really shiny on one side of the seat. There was probably .020" of an inch of play in the guide to valve stems. |
