Oil sensor sending unit
 

On my last jaunt I noticed that the oil level guage was pegged up. I found the wires to the sensor frayed and off the unit. I attached new couplings and reattached the wires but the guage is still pegged. A ohm meter across the terminals goes to infinity. Does this mean the sensor is electrically "open" and faulty or is it a problem in one of the wires?

Hate to be a PIA but, I've read the other posts on this subject an still have a little confusion as to if the problem is a ground fault in the wire of a failure of the sensor. If there is an expert out there, which there always is (I love this place) please chime in!!!!

The location of the oil level sensor wiring assures a continuing spray of water, mud, alkaline dust, etc ... all prone to cause corrosion of the ground lug and threaded stud it is attached to ... there are dissimilar metals involved in the reactions, too!

A cursory check with a multimeter is meaningless until that lug is removed and cleaned [along with the stud and attaching hardware] ... fine stainless toothbrush-style brushes, degreasing spray like Brakleen, 9% pickling vinegar, 91% isopropyl alcohol, distilled water, and compressed air are appropriate to use in the cleaning process.

The resistance of the sensor [a wiper rubbing on a wire-wound phenolic resistance element board] is definitely low [< 1000 Ohms] no matter what the oil level is presently at ...

good advice. warren has a phd in porsche. he'd make the move to stuttgart, only he'd find the germans to be sorely lacking in attention to detail. when god made him and said 'all hail', warren thought he heard 'detail' and got in line twice.. ;)

still looking for that dang vinegar...

ahh..it's in my cupboard..but the pickles must be really, really small..everytime i grill a burger i go looking in the jar..they aren't there.. :(

I guess I should have mentioned in the past ... the pickling vinegar is only available in gallon jugs! I was aware, of course, but my wife just reminded me -- that it would only be on the bottom shelf at the store ... so if you have been looking at eye level, that may be one reason you haven't found it thus far!!!

lol..in the grocery i tend to scan from 'leg level' to 'tit level'.. ;) guess i need to look even lower. :)

you can imagine, warren..my 'scanning technique' leaves me 'vulnerable' to repeated cart crashes.. ;)
