problems installing windshield

Starting off I have been working for hours trying to get the old trim in the seal. I got one side on and then broke the windshield pushing on the other side. I don't know if new trim would help or not but there has to be a trick to getting it in.

I have another windshield but it has part of the rearview mirror still on it. How does one get that off?

Im quitting for now before I break anything else. At least I got the rear back in.

I know this doesn't seem to make sense, but the book I have says to put the rubber around the glass, then lube the trim groove and install the trim leaving gap between the ends of the trim. Then install the whole thing using the pull chord technique. So, the trim goes in before you mount the windshield in the car. Seems odd, but it worked for me, although it was a real pain to get the trim in, and keep it in place while I mounted the glass. I had to gently force it back into the groove in places when I was done mounting. I used glycerin for lube and it was a mess to work with, and a little too slick I think.
Maybe others will chime in with more/better advice.
