Thank you - selling my pelican-influenced baby

I'm writing to thank you guys for all of the information and guidance over the years. I've been a fairly silent pelican bbs member (especialy recently), but I've learned a tremendous amount. After monts of indecision I've decided to sell my 1971T. Time with my new daughter has replaced my time with this car.

It is, thanks to the people on the board, an great car. Every modification and improvement made was made after researching extensively on this board. Between this site, 101 Projects, and Bruce's HPH book, I had most of what I needed to know.

I don't know how to post images but here is a link to many pictures. I hope you will enjoy them.

http://share.shutterfly.com/action/welcome?sid=8Batm7Ry3asgm

My intent was to build an RGruppe car but keep the narrow fenders. Here is what is on it:

Body: 911 non-sunroof coupe, bare metal repaint to Porsche arctic silver in 2000. Superb paint jobby Dink Farmer. It has a steel S-spoiler, with all new rubber, S moldings, front grilles, and Porsche crest. Body is straight, no dents. Front pan replaced, any rust areas patched and welded. New Durant mirror. No cheap fender flares.

Engine/Transmission: ROW (higher compression) 3.0 SC motor, professionally rebuilt. New PMO carbs and carbon fiber fan housing. SSI heat exchangers / headers. Dansk 2-in, 1-out stainless sport muffler. Rebuilt 915 transmission (swapped out 901 to handle power of new motor). No oil drips or leaks anywhere. New oil lines.

Suspension: Chuck's Elephant racing polybronze busings, front and rear. No squeaks. New adjustable spring-plates. Through-body anti-roll bars (S bars). 21mm front, 27mm rear torsion bars, new. Turbo tie rods. Aluminum rear trailing arms with new shocks and wheel bearings. Front camber brace. All new SC rotors, calipers, and pads with stainless lines.

Wheels/Tires: Absolutely perfect, no scuffs. 205/55/16s all around. I have center caps.

Interior: New dash – no cracks and new headliner. Gauges restored by Palo Alto Speedometer, Recaro sport seats in black leather. Restored/recovered by Cook’s upholstery. German silverknit carpet throughout. Has door pockets and map pockets. New 930s steering wheel.

I honestly have no idea what this car is worth. When I was taking pictures a guy stopped his car and said, "You selling that? Don't do it, you are making a mistake that you will regret." Probably so.

Jamie,
that is one beautiful car.
My 2 cents worth.....do not sell.
I had a 72 for 19 years. All dressed up as a 73 RS (long before it was fashionable). A friend of a friend heard about it and as they say :money talks" and the rest is history (it now sleeps day and night in a heated garage, never to see the setting sun).
One of the many mistakes I have made but the one I will always remember.
I am not in a financial position to buy your car (based on the pictures it should fetch a good buck) but if I were I would be all over it.
Lots of success with the sale but take 10 long deep breaths first

Jamie,
Inspirational story. I have regretted every Porsche I've sold. I hope my '71 comes together like yours did. What a beautiful car.
Best of luck in selling it.

Tough one to price. In original pristine condition would be worth a lot, but with mods (don't get me wrong, the car is GORGEOUS) it does diminish the overall value. I would say around $20K wouldn't be a stretch, but once you enter that territory you are up against 964's and even low end 993's.

Just MHO of course. It's "worth" whatever someone will pay in the end!

Thanks guys for your comments. I didn't realize how beautiful that car was until I looked through the lens last night.

I hope the buyer is someone nearby so that I can still see and hear the car on occasion.

Man,

Your car is bueatiful!

-I think it's worth a solid 25k, determine for your self what it's worth to you, and be firm on that price, if you can't get what it's worth dont sell it! you put too much time and $ into that thing to let it go easy!

Do your daughter a favor and keep it. The increase in value over the next 10-12 years will buy her a car when she is 16.

Not to mention it is flat gorgeous.

I came to this conclusion a few years ago: 'hang onto my cool stuff, stop selling it!!'

I don't think you do. It will be painful, especially if seller's remorse sets in, which it invariably does for differing lengths of time for each person.

Sometimes it's time to move on. I've regretted selling few cars. Yet, I've sold plenty. There is always that thought that if I had to do things over again, would I have sold that particular car? In the end, the answer is mostly yes.

Of course, I don't think I've ever owned the perfect car. Maybe that's it. We're always "looking over the fence."

AFA value, add up your receipts. The car is going up in value. Don't take anything less than what you expect. You could always have it professionally appraised. Early 911s have become like the 356 and those are out of sight lately.

That is an absolutely beautiful car!!!
Please don't sell it, your daughter will soon be old enough to enjoy riding in it. We have a 2 yr old girl and my 1970 911T sat unused for a while when she was born but now I take her on short drives.

If you have to sell, I would say you would get $18k easily, $20k with some time, and north of $20k will take just the right person. So, I would price it at $25k so if that right person buys it you will be happier with the price, and if it doesn't sell you still have a great car to enjoy!

Thumbs down

Unless you Really REALLY need the money, do not sell that car!! It appears you have constructed the PERFECT longhood Consider it one of the "Family Jewels", to be passed on from generation to generation. So you don't drive it much for awhile, you can still drive it some of the time!! In a few years your daughter will be begging to go with "PaPa" at every opportunity, and you will be spending "quality time" with her. Save your self much grief down the road, KEEP IT!!!

Nice car. Pricing is tough. I've seen a car which is setup similarly for sale down here in San Diego that has not moved for months. It has fresh paint, is a 73 longhood with a fresh bottom end ($3500) 3.0L w/ MFI, 915, cooler, etc. Pretty sweet. The guy has been asking $18k and it has been on the market for months, maybe 1/2 year. Maybe he's not advertising it in the right place and hard to compare yours side by side. It is in the PCA classifieds for San Diego Region. I expect to get 1/2 of what $$$ goes into these cars as far as receipts. People always use the term "invested $XXXXX". I hate to say it, but this is not an investment, it is a hobby. Rattlesnak sold his car for $29k or something therabouts with tens of thousands more into it and he had a 993 motor + all the bells and whistles. Albeit different kind of car, but still not 100% original, period correct 911T. It did not sell immediately, either. Don't get me wrong, I love these cars, but thinking you will get $25k or even more than $20k seems a LONG SHOT. If you are dead set to sell, find a buyer that loves the car as much as you do, ask for first right of refusal if he / she sells it and make the deal happen. Heck, maybe you can negotiate visitation rights ;-)

If I were selling I'd be in the same boat, so don't feel bad.

Doug

ok, i'll be the lowballer then..... $33K???

i feel bad that you had to make such a decision. wanting to spend time w/ your family is understandable, and i would agree if your car required lots of time put into it, but it seems like it won't be taking much of your time since everything seems to be finished/addressed, no?

you've really assembled a beautiful sleeper. wish you could enjoy it some more

Unless you really need the money, put that car away. Enjoy the time with your daughter. You'll be wanting to take her for rides soon enough. The car is a beauty. Don't sell.
