engine powdercoating
The engine is out and after reading alot of good reviews on the board i went and bought one of the craftsman powdercoating guns, i want to do some color match parts but dont want to go overboard, was wondering if anyone would submit past project pictures to give me some ideas of which parts i should do, its a 2.2l with k & n filters so pretty much the whole top of the engine is now visible.

I did the fan/shroud, valve covers, fan belt cover, and cam housing covers. Ended up painting the engine tin and engine support bracket due to size of some pieces being too big to fit in the oven.

Do you have a second ovenin the garage or just one in your kitchen? Are there a lot of fumes when baking? I am curious, but I don't have room and don't want to purchase an oven for the garage.

It has to be done in a separate oven, preferably far away from the house, that will never be used for cooking ever again. The smell and fumes are nasty.

This is a safety issue, not a wife acceptance factor issue.
Read the MSDS and then see what you think... also if you sell your haouse and somebody gets sick and can trace it back to what you put in the oven... good luck explaining to the jury that it's ok to bake car parts in a food oven...

with the disasters my ex used to cook, i'd have nothing to fear..smoked up our old highrise so badly that it triggered like a 4-alarm. six pissed-off firefighters finally made it to our door (on the tenth floor) in full gear, huffing and puffing..and with a look like they were tempted to use their axes on me when i explained and showed them the baked chicken. they passed on the dinner invitation..
![]() ryan oh..just to be clear..i've never baked parts in an oven, but i have stayed in a holiday inn express before..and i still believe a fridge is for beer.. ![]()

there actually is some low level risk from burned food (including BBQ)... the key word is poly-cyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (broke it down - many ring structures, the class of compounds is aromatic, has a smell, and is made mostly of H and C atoms) PAHs is shorter
Of course, your body has built-in detoxification mechanisms and these have evolved over millions of years - so many will choose to accept the risk of a BBQ'd piece of animal muscle... Well, I feel the need to administer some relaxants to my blood vessels... time for some Et-OH

Even if you are a bachelor, you do NOT want to be doing this in a kitchen oven, LOL
I made my oven to do my powdercoating pretty cheaply. It IS crude, but effective. Here's a pic of the oven doing it's thing, and some of the parts that came out of it. ![]() ![]() More pics available if needed...

Finally a good application for used appliances, if you see a stove sitting at the curb, that's your new powder coating cooker!

Do you save a lot of money after you buy all the needed items for home powder coating vs. paying a pro shop??

good question - let me rephrase it as "where is the break-even point"?
- and what was the heat source above?
