IMHO -- Yes.

Although, mine died without even a whimper.

Hi Med,

Mine whines when it's hot - either avter running at the track, or during very hot weather, with high ambient temperatures.

Often times, adding more gasoline to the tank, to top it off, helps, as the gasoline acts like a cooling agent as it recirculates back and forth through the system to the tank, to the motor, and back to the tank. That helps to cool off the pump.

But everyone is right, eventually a whining fuel pump is a sign that the end is near. Timing is anyones guess.

As long as you can hear the fuel pump whinning I wouldn't be to concern. It's only when you DON'T hear the fuel pump whinning then I would be a little concern.

Depending on the amount of particulate contamination present in your fuel tank, degree of blockage of the fuel tank strainer & fuel filter ... it may. or may not be an indication of impending death of the fuel pump!

Test the fuel pump output directly into a large glass [or clear plastic] container of 1 qt/liter or more ... it should put out 750 cc or more in 30 seconds! If the fuel output isn't sparkling clear, or if fine rust settles out after an hour or more ... you may need to address fuel tank issues!

Test the current draw of the fuel pump before you do the output test [no potential fuel vapor hazard present] ... the max. allowable drain is 8.00 Amps!

If the drain is excessive ... test again after fuel tank has been cleaned and sealed, and after fuel filter is replaced!

I'm an electrical novice...how do I go about testing the draw of the fuel pump. I want to figure out if excessive draw may have been the reason for a fuel pump relay failure. The relay heated up enough to where it melted the plastic around the female part of the socket/harness.

Thx!

I've found that 0n my 89 the fuel hose between the tank and the pump when old will come apart on the inside and the pump will suck the parts into the pump or it may suck the hose shut and the result will be that it will run out of gas.It will REALY WHINE.
