Need help figuring out what to offer

Im looking to make a offer on this car at a local dealership, its a 1977 cabrio with a blown 2.7 engine. car has 96000 miles. dealer also has a 3.0 that he would sell that runs. assuming excellent condition, what should i offer for the car? what for the engine?

Get a pre-purchase inspection and let us know the results, also leakdown and compression tests on the 3.0 by an independent shop. A value depends completely on the results, otherwise it's just a (very) wild guess. Posting more pictures of the engine bay and interior will help us help you.

heres what im thinking, im looking for a price for the car with the bad 2.7 engine, we will assume that the engine is shot and the interior and exterior are in great shape, when i get a better look at it i will adjust me price, but i need a starting price. any thoughts. also would assume on the 3.0 that is will need a rebuild in the near future. so as far that goes, i dont think it is worth much at all not being able to test it in anyway.

Well, its a flared cab which didn't exist in 77 and which I'm sure you know. So, its appeal I would bet would be very limited..racers like coupes. I can't help but wonder what is under that nice paint. Personally, I don't think it will fetch much.

Hard to tell from one small exterior pic. What is the seller asking? Have they given any indication as to what they're looking for?

javadog 02-17-2006 05:47 AM

Brian,

Using your assumptions, I wouldn't buy the car. You'll never get your money back out of it.

I've seldom seen a modified car like this, that has been done to a high standard of workmanship. Usually, they take a pretty crappy car and tart it up. Under the shiny paint, it's normally pretty ugly, with lot's of problems.

I wouldn't give it a second glance. Sorry.

Assuming a shot engine and ? tranny- Yikes, 5-7K? since you'll be putting a WHOLE LOT of money into it. I'm sure others will chime in. Probably not worth tackling unless you are going to do all the work yourself or really really love the color, style, etc.

bbaer6676 02-17-2006 05:54 AM

thats kinda what i was thinking, he wants 10k and 3500 for the 3.0 engine, both of them i thought were off base, i was just wondering what would be a good asking price, you are right though, most modifications arent done well, i might still check it out to see what its like but dont really have any intent to buy anymore.

Good move on passing the car.

WHATEVER! 14k plus labor into that heap is not an option. Good move passing. You can get an SC cabrio for 14k in NICE shape.

That's a 5K roller....period.

If the 3.0 was so good, let the DEALER put it in as a running car. He's trying to avoid something.....run Forrest, RUN....

im going to head up an look at it this weekend. i would be doing all my own work, but for what he is asking no way, if he cuts it in half, we shall see. its only 30 mins away, atleast it will be a nice drive.

bigchillcar 02-18-2006 08:59 AM

bbaer..your 'location' isn't shown, so we don't know where your are. if you're like me, in arkansas, you're right..911's don't appear every day, but guys on this board either buy on e-bay, sometimes sight unseen at a calculated risk, or they echange beaucoup photos and conversations with selling owners in remote locations, pay for remote ppi's and then often fly out to complete the transaction or pay to have their new car hauled. it isn't cheap..and it can be time-consuming, but i think the other members' concerns about this car who have chimed in are well-founded. he's asking an awful lot for this car. probably hoping to catch someone who isn't particularly knowledgable about 911's in general. if i were to go take a look, i think i'd leave my wallet at home..or take cash with me in the range of 1/3 of what he's asking, just so i didn't make an emotional bonehead decision. on the other hand, you're the owner of a 911 and 912, so you should know much better than the average joe what to look for. looking doesn't 'hurt', but buying might! ;) good luck!

Reading this thread makes me feel like I'm watcing the old Elvira Mistress of the Dark.

It's like a scene in a B horror movie when the guy hears a noise outside in the middle of the night and decides to leave the safety of his house to find out what it was. Everyone watching is jumping up and down saying "don't do it" but of course, the guy goes out to the woodshed in his pajamas.

You hear a loud roar, a scream, and then silence.

bigchillcar 02-18-2006 10:07 AM

elvira has a car for you, honey...
