Does anyone what the deal is with this kind of auction? I've seen it before but I'm unsure of the angle.

Obvious scam. Hijacked account, and he wants you to send some $$$ via Western Union or some other channel. Piece of trash should be drawn and quartered.

If you email him he'll ask for your name and address for shipping and then set up a link for you to send a deposit. People still fall for it.

In "My Ebay", go the bottom left hand column and click "Security and Resolution Center" and report that item # as fraud.

BTW - I have also gotten a couple of PayPal phishing scams recently - the URL is very close to the real one.

I e-mailed the seller and received this:

"Hello there and thanks for your interest.
Firstly, I want you to know that I ended my auction early because of a buyer who assured me that he will purchase, but just bailed on me in the last minute. The price that I want to obtain is $8,200 (includeing shipping and insurance charges). I'm requesting a US $4,000 REFUNDABLE deposit prior to transporting the car to your location and the remaining balance to be paid upon delivery, inspection and approval of vehicle.
The car is like new, everything is in perfect working order, low miles. 2003 Porsche 911 Turbo TechArt GT2 model. It has always been garage kept and adult driven, never abused or raced . It is a US model in compliance with US emissions, clear title in hand, still registered in USA and you will have no problem registering it onto your name. The car will be shipped via air freight from Zagreb, Croatia and it will take no more than 7 business days to arrive at your location.
This is a large purchase and I would suggest using a third party to complete this purchase as I want a smooth and safe transaction. We will use Escrow Europa, I have completed quite a large number of successful deals using them. I have a Purchase Protection Account of US $10,000 and I assume you know what this means.
If you agree with these terms, please reply with your full name and address and I will consign the transaction at eBay asap.
Regards,"

Sounds legit to me. I'm sending funds and I'll be waiting at the dock for my new baby to arrive!

Best take your fishing pole. You'll be there a long, long time.
