930 Exhaust Question

Hi everyone,
I am preparing to buy a friends 930 Turbo that is completely stock, and I was thinking of adding an aftermarket muffler to it. I'd prefer a quality muffler that adds a nice sound to the car, but isn't extremely loud. Do you have any suggestions regarding the muffler to get? I was thinking of a Fabspeed after visiting their site. Also, would the fuel mixture need to be adjusted to compensate for the muffler? Thanks for your advice.

Wildcat96,

Seeing you are in KC i would head over to Imagine Auto. They have all sorts of... well really everything for 930's.

I've got the Fabspeed dual outlet muffler.

It replaces the CAT and muffler. It is pretty loud - sets off car alarms (but it sounds great, in my opinion).

I didn't adjust my mixture (I have it running rich).

A pic of my install:

Fabspeed seems to be the best choice right now. I doubt just a muffler change will warrent a mixture change.

Fabspeed sounds good. Also, do I need to modify the rear valance to accomodate the new muffler, or would it just bolt right on? I plan on having Imagine Auto do the work since they are only 15 minutes down the road. Thanks again.

I am pretty sure a single outlet is a direct bolt-in.

With the dual, I had to cut and paint the rear valance to accept the other outlet. It was pretty simple to cut, and I ordered a can of color-matched spraypaint that looks just fine.

One more thing, the dual design is just like the factory on the 964 Turbo 3.6 system - the left pipe is for a wastegate dump, not engine exhaust. So, I think you get the same power with a single or dual Fabspeed, just the single retains the factory wastegate dump.

I have the single 4.5" outlet. it's a direct bolt-on to the turbo flange. it's not that loud. I also have the B&B headers and K27-7200 set-up with it. I'm pleased. nice workmanship on the FabSpeed unit. in fact, it's the only component that hasn't heat tarnished; still bright and shiny.

Hi Wildcat! 15 minutes eh!? Wow, come by on Fri afternoons around 3 or so for what we call hobby day. We all hang out and chit chat about nothing and have a coke...or um I bet one can find a beer in the fridge!!

My recommendation is Fabspeed. If you want to see one we have several on motor in the shop and I think one running car with one. There are no mods for the single outlet.

Stephen,
I'll definitly have to stop by the shop and listen to the Fabspeed system. I still can't decide on the dual or single outlet as I love the looks of the dual outlet, but am not that excited about cutting the rear valance. Are there any true performance gains with the muffler set up?

Is this Mr. Flood?

If it is then no, being a 79 there are no benefits at stock levels. Any other 930 from 86 on there is a gain since the cat is very restrictive.

The valance is no big deal. You can order another as a spare incase you want to go back. After a while you will forget about it.

Keep in mind the second outlet is from the wastegate ah la C2T

Check with Pelican Ben or mb911. He makes some very nice stuff. Light, handmade in good ole USA (not China/Fabspeed), and at a reasonable price.

I am pretty sure Fabspeed isn't made in China.

I manufacture product in China for a living, and the Fabspeed isn't marked according to import laws if it is... I will be pretty disappointed if it is imported (not for quality issues, just misrepresentation).

Stephen,
You are correct it is Mr. Flood. Once I finalize the purchase we'll have to look at putting an exhaust on it. Thanks everyone for your input.

I have full GHL exhaust (headers and dual out muffler) and it's LOUD! But, that's how I like it!

I have the same setup...I set off car alarms, but I don't think it's THAT loud....at least it's not as loud as the straight "dump" pipe that's on there now!

My Fabspeed doesn't set off car alarms because it is loud, per say, it is because it has that deep resonance that shakes the cars (and sounds absoulutely wonderful!).

Loud is a Harley-Davidson with a pipe!

It is really shocking how it isn't loud at all being a straight through design. There are other systems that claim to be similar but are very loud. I personally find it just right.

Now, loud is a straight pipe. Man, that is loud

I stand corrected. I checked the website and it states that it is "handcrafted" in the USA.
