HELP...high idle on '82 911SC
So I recently bought a nice '82 SC Targa to use as a daily driver. I need to license this car but it needs to pass emmissions first. One of the requirements is that it must idle at or around 1000 rpm. Mine does not...most of the time it is between 1800 and 2000 rpm.
My mechanic told me that the problem might be a faulty auxillary air regulator and to try plugging some of the large vacuum lines till it idles correctly. So I did.... Here is a photo of the part and the dark hose is the one I piinched off... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1140455250.jpg I pinched off the large rubber hose going into the Auxillary air regulator and the idle dropped to a correct level. Is there a way to repair this part to make it function properly as Pelican says they are NLA or can this part be bypassed and still run and pass emmissions correctly. Thanks, Chris |
Hey Chris,
I am going through the same thing right now. This weekend I replaced a ton of Vac hoses then tested the AAR. See my post earlier today. Anyway, let me know what you find out. Milo |

I had an old '77 BMW 320i that had the same part. IIRC, it just functions when the engine is cold. Once warmed up, the valve in the AAR closes and blocks the air. It sounds like your valve is stuck open. Plugging the line is just what the device does when the engine warms up so plugging it shouldn't have any effect on passing the smog test. Since these are NLA, I wonder if one could be cheaply retrofitted from another CIS car?? |
So if I "permanantly" plugged the hose, would it affect cold starts?
|
Yeah, your idle would be low until the engine warmed up.
