Front Strut Insert
Help! I can't get the front strut insert out of the strut housing on my 86 911 with Boge shocks. I am sure they are original. The top dust shield is off, the threaded cap is off (man was that tight) and it is drooling green fluid. Any hints would be fantastic, as I have four new replacement Bilstein shocks in from Pelican.

The oil in the strut housing is creating a vacuum as you try to pull the strut out. Try inverting the strut housing and getting as much of the oil as possible to drain out.

There is a small rubber o-ring running between the outside of the top of the old insert and the strut. Pry it out with a dentist's pick or screwdriver to relieve the vacuum and the strut should pull out,

ianc beat me to it!!!
I just ran into this same problem last weekend. Remove the rubber o-ring and the insert pretty much just sits there looking at you like you are a complete dumba$$. ( ok, maybe I imagined that last part.) Dentist's pick worked great. |
OK, thanks, that did it, I now have that puppy out of there! I truly appreciate the response, as this is my first experience with struts. Now if I can just figure out what all goes back in with the new unit..........

Thanks ianc, I should be able to finish it up now. Didn't know what to do with that small balck washer. By the way, the old insert sure was easy to compress.
