Question 911 to crusher, or a new life with a "alternate" drivetrain??

I have a bare shell which requires lots of metal work. The rust is so excessive in some areas I was told it wouldnt be worth the trouble, and basically cant be repaired. I really dont want to send a porsche shell off to its death, and would rather save it for another "new" life.

If one was to be given the option, would you:
1. Swap a new drivetrain into it, and build the car around the drivetrain? (such as sti awd, ls1 v8, 4g63 evo, or, and other good choice?)
2. junk it.

At the point it is at, it can never be returned to porsche standards, nor would i find it acceptable, so my other thoughts were to "build" the car round a new powerplant, which would replace a lot of the useless rusted metal anyways.
porsche enthusiasts, who hate these engine conversion(mixing blood) I would like to hear from as well.

some ideas:
-sti engine, w/ awd converted, at around 500hp range
-ls1 kept rwd, or possible awd as well.
-evo 6g63
-rotary(altough no torque, or major power really)
-some other highly boosted motor?

thoughts, ideas, comments, hate?

A bad car is still a bad car, no matter what engine you use. Most of the rust is in areas not affected by the engine, or even a full roll cage. Put a bunch of HP in it and tear the tub to pieces is about what you will accomplish. If you must do this, at least double check the suspension pick up points.

I'd hate to see it go to the crusher, I'm sure someone would want the shell.

Th amt. of work to save an early car will ususally be well worth it.

If a bumper car, then just let people cut the good parts out to repair their cars in better shape, and let the rusted parts be recycled into new steel.

its a 1971 shell, and it would obviously have to be caged pretty extensively, at least to hold it all together with some massive hp numbers.
the suspension points actually all look pretty solid.
I guess it would be mostly by choice on my part. since most the the car will have to be cut away, I just think it would be good time to do something drastic. awd conversion similar to a c4/g64 would sound nice.

Post some pics of the rusty areas. There's enough experienced guys around here to tell you if saving it is worthwhile.

Almost any car can be saved, there are lots of good weld in repair panels out there. Try to sell it before cutting it up. Once it's gone it's gone forever.
I bought a 70t and found more rust than I bargained for. I bought a mig welder and have put in a new floor, rocker panel kits and longitudinal repair panels on both sides. It won't be a show car but certainly a go car.
where is the car located?

Wait for Jpnovak to come along... he's going to take my rusty coupe and try to bring it back to life. It needs new floor pans, new kick panels (up by the pedals), the front suspension pan is toast... the back parcel deck and rear seat buckets are gone.

Nothing 'can't' be done, it's just a matter of how difficult it will be to accomplish.

I also forgot to mention, I would like to challenge myself, by converting it to all wheel drive perhaps. This would require making a custom front suspension, maybe lightly based upon the 911 still.

another "opinion" choice for the audience:
1. superlight car RWD w/ 400-550fwhp
2. heavier "chunky" car AWD w/ overpowered 600-700hp

hmm..

Hmm let's see.

Rusted out shell.

Conversion to alternate drivetrain.

Sounds like a 5 year project to me.

If you've got lots of time, money, garage space and perserverance then go for it. If not then sell or part it. There's plenty of other early cars in better condition that need saving.

Hello there.

Obviously its worth saving..that you know.

So even if its only worth a few hundred, sell it.

Ifin yoy want to do some sort of hot-rod, you will be dollars ahead satring with a later car..

Unless your time is worth nothing..

Kind regards
david

put a VW bus tranny that will fit with a Porsche engine, or use a VW Beetle tranny. Also go to Kennedy Engineered Porducts at www.kennedyeng.com. They sells a lot of engine and transmission adapters to Porsche and VW.
