Shift Linkage Cover nut
Does anyone make those little rectangular or square nuts that pop in the tunnel to hold the shift linkage cover on? One of the four of mine must have fallen through and is shredded. So far I am unable to find a replacement for the little thing.

Try your local Autozone, Pepboys, etc. I believe those actually are a common part. Take one with you.

It's a 3/16ths inch (or, 4.8mm) "speed nut." Part number 999.591.329.02. Available about everywhere.

I believe these are different from speed nuts (they have different retaining tabs to fit the punched rectangular body holes). I couldn't ever find a reliable Porsche part number so I had Parts Heaven in Hayward pull a couple for me from several 911/912 "hulks" going to the crusher.

Jim,
Speed nut is a sort of generic term. There are several kinds with different shapes. Some have locating tabs and others don't. They are also known as Tinnerman nuts. Surprisingly, Porsche even calls them speed nuts. Usually they come up with a name that totally obfuscates the function. It's interesting to note that there are no true metric sheet metal screws. All of them are sized in fractions of an inch. The Germans just calculate the metric size, to the nearest tenth of a millimeter. It was a lot easier when I figured out I could go anywhere to get such hardware, since the Germans just use ours. I usually just take one down to the store and match it. JR JR |
