Shroud, Ducts & Gaps - Oh MY~!
The engine is rebuilt and putting on the shrouds and ducts.
First the easy one: where the alternator wires come thru the hole in the center of the shroud, is there - should there be - a grommet (rubber)? The bummer one: Backdate to 1974 Less Blower Heat - Left Side Plastic Hot Air Socket... All holes match up: 2 on the shroud, 1 on the fan housing, 1 on the block - But Look - Pretty significant gap at the bottom right of the socket, and about a 1/4" gap up the right vertical side~!! Common? Unusual? Socket does not appear to be warped. What to do? ![]() The less hurtful one: Back date 74 Right Side Metal Hot Air Socket Plate. With a little bit of bending where it meets the fan housing - a pretty good fit... But see the circled cut out square opening at the bottom left corner? What's with that? OK as is - or? ![]() Just how 'air tight' must the shroud, ducting and sockets be? I'm thinking 'pretty darn' tight is necessary... Thoughts? Thanks! Jim

Grommet, yes.
It is worth (wuth?) the effort to try and plug any air gaps. Any air leaking out the gaps is not cooling your heads and cylinders. I would try repositioning the block off plates to mininize any leakage, and fashion some type of plug for that square hole. The big air-loss area that is often overlooked is the spark pug boots. Those are big holes that can let a lot of air escape. Old boots tend to seal poorly, and often are not seated properly.

Hi Chuck
Help some more: 'Reposition the block off plates'~? Confused... The left side hot air socket isn't used along with any 'block off plates' - is it? (It's not 'blocked off' it's channeling air - right?)

By 'reposition' I mean to loosen the bolts and slide it around to minimize the gaps. Ovalize the holes a bit if needed.
