Replace Speedometer

Even a caveman could do it:)

Donor speedo 150MPH

85MPH... Get Real! To get the speedo out I went thru the trunk and used a pipe 2 feet long and pushed the speedo out.

1 white/green and 2 black/blue light wires. Why? I don't know but I put it back the way I took it out.

When taking the lightbulb sockets out use a small flat tip screw driver and gently pry under the socket. Don't pull on the wire.

Wow. Your car just gained over 15,000 miles. Another option is getting the face replaced on the original speedo, and having it recalibrated to the new face. You keep the same odometer reading that way.

I just grab the gauges from the front and pull them out. A lot easier than poking at them with a stick.

I'm going to keep my old speedo for future reference.

I tried to pull it out but it was stuck in there. The rubber gasket was and still is doing it's job 24 years later:)

Nah, this being a CAVEMAN repair, you had to use a stick! :D

huh?? Our speedometer is not digital. It is mechanical and doesn't have a cable? What drives the counter?
Is the picture of the back is a speedometer or the tach meter (RPM)?

They changed to electronic at some point in 78. The transmission has a magnetic wheel and a little pickup. There is a little electric motor in the gauge that drives the odometer.

Sorry to bring this thread back to life a year later, but I just did this replacement job myself.

So, what is the market value of an 85mph speedometer?
