How do you know 3.2 motronic is at optimal?
How do you know 3.2 motronic is at optimal? I'm pretty sure she is based on her performance.
Before I speak with Frank Eibel or Dave White wanted to know what has proven for you. This is info I can use today and for next 3.2 motronic motor. Given new rebuild, with stock cam, chip/ssi, looking for ideas. And the ssi may have to go too. What is first: airflow meter check? Thank you. |
The motronic system is very good and for the most part self regulating. IF the car seems to be running well, the motronic system is fine. You CAN increase performance with exhaust mods and or a new chip_such as a steve wong. You only have to worry about the motronic system if the car is not running, or running poorly. Just my .02.

Ok so I am going to change fuel filter in the engine comparment. Ill get one next week. And K&N needs cleaning.
The fuel pump is newer. Dont recall a filter up there. Rear fuel lines all newer (in braided stainless). Idle control valve newer so no gunk there. Never one problem with injectors. Exterior of motronic intake detailed (but needs it again. Waiting on hose from host: paper hose, fan blower to heat exchanger.) Have (had, I need to find them )new 90 degree hoses to go on idle control valve. Oil Castrol 20 50 (lots of fresh oil). She's never had a tank of regular gas, fuel used is strictly premium. |
You might also have your mixture checked and have it set to spec for best performance.

I just had a run-in with my mixture, and it seems to me that it is difficult to find the balance between the mixture adjustment and the O2 sensor fluctuation that works year round. I had my mixture checked and adjusted in July, and lately I've had a hesitation on accelleration that wasn't present in the summer. After doing a thorough test of everything I could without a CO meter, I simply marked the AFM mixture screw's current location, and gave a 1/2 CW turn (richer). Viola! Smooth as silk. It made me wonder if the timing of the original mixture check and adjust could have skewed the results, due to the differences in the atmospheric pressure in summer and winter. The AFM flap opens the same distance during the winter, but the density of the air is greater, causing a leaner condition. If the mixture was set in the summer, and was adjusted closer to the lean extreme of the O2 sensor's range, then the leaner winter condition could stray outside of the O2 sensor's ability to compensate, which would explain my symptoms.

If you want to know for sure if your 1/2 turn made the difference then it must be repeatable. I would go back and turn it to it's original position and see if your hesitation returned.
It just seems to me that 1/2 turn either way on an AFM is hardly enough to make any difference but maybe something else was disturbed while you had the AFM out and put back on. After that it might make more sense. Phantom |
Good point, but I'm not sure I wanna mess with it when it's purring like a kitten. I'll let you know if I do it.

On my 86 3.2 I can get an allen in the AFM and make an adjustment in a matter of seconds without removing the meter.

I thougt the CO only affected open-loop operation? (e.g. cold starts and WOT)

No, the CO adjustment simply opens/closes a bypass cavity in the AFM, causing the flap to move more or less, which sends a corresponding reference to the DME. It's basically a fine-tune for the notched wheel spring that is inside the AFM. It affects operation at all times. My adjustment screw is a flat blade, which I can adjust while running, but I can't see inside while turning, so it isn't as accurate. I removed the AFM, marked it carefully, and made the change with it out of the car. It is possible that there was some other issue that actually solved my hesitation, but I've messed with this stuff enoiugh to doubt it.

The red arrow is pointing to the adjustment screw. Note the narrow cavity that bypasses the flap chamber.
