You're not assembling a motor w/o a book handy, are you? It's too easy to leave out something, or miss a step w/o a reminder unless you do this frequently.

AFA the sealer, just do a search or go over to ShopTalkForums and search on the various VW type engines. Those guys have tried everything

Here's a link to some sealants and their uses. I don't know for sure, but I think Pelican carries many of the same and can be added in to your next order. A lot of this stuff is not available at just any parts store.

no, i have the book, thats how i know to use 574 loctite. i also read that the through bolts are torqued at 25 lbs, but i cant find anything on the locking nuts. i know that the torque is what controls the bearing clearance on the crank so i want to get it right. guess ill just have to seach through the book some more.

What "locking nuts?" If you have a double nut, I haven't seen that engine. My early motors have an acorn nut, 25 lbs., that's it, game over.

Anyway, if you have any situation where you use a lock nut, or double nut as I think that refers to, you would simply use the generic, chart stated torque value for that size/pitch nut. Or, if the value is less than the generic chart because of a stud in AL, or thru bolt in an AL case, then you might stop at the lesser value. If Jim Sims sees this, he'll now for sure.

I believe he means the M8 nuts (13 mm across the flats) with the fibre or poly locking insert used on the perimeter of the case and in the bell housing end. The torque for these nuts is listed in the table in Wayne's engine rebuild book (page 200) three lines down from the through bolt torque. Most of these nuts engage studs but one or two attach to bolts at the perimeter seam. The torque for these nuts is 18 ft-lbs.
