My starting woes...
Hi All,
I'm new to the forum, but not new to working on my own car. I bought an 89 Carrera in Sept. 2005. Mechanically, engine is sound, and all non-gear transmission parts has been replaced (new clutch, flywheel, etc.) in the last month. The car will not start when cold; when warm, it starts no problem. The car can be bump-started no problem. Things I've done so far: - New ground cable at battery. - New ground strap at transmission. - Battery load-tests fine. - Large power cable (black) to starter measures 12.78 volts. - Small power cable (yellow) to selenoid measures 0.00 volts when key is turned to start position. I've searched the forum and found a few posibilities (namely, the ignition switch), but I'd like some opinions other electrical issues: - The previous owner swapped the original stereo for a 993 in-dash CD stereo. It cuts out intermintently, then comes back (not road-surface related). - The seatbelt light turns on and off periodically while driving (not road-surface related, nor is it related to stereo cutting in and out). - Headlights dim, then return to full brightness. Could all of these problems be related, if the power for the stereo was spliced incorrectly? I'm not an expert on electical issues, but by the time I'm done troubleshooting all of these issues, I may be! Any help/constructive opinios would be greatly appreciated. Thanx, al knapp |

I don't see how the intermittent start could be related to anything but the electrical portion of your ignition switch, assuming you measured 0 Volts while cranking ... at the #50 Yellow solenoid lead!

Could be your starter. The next time it happens, jack the car up, place stands properly and give the starter/solenoid a good rap with a mallet. Drop the car down and try to start the car.

Warren - yes, 0 volts at the #50 Yellow solenoid lead. I tested this on Saturday afternoon. Before that, bump-started it, and took it out for an hour-long drive. Got back home, started fine multiple times. Car cooled off, no start. I'll re-test tonight.
kqw - After re-test tonight, I'll use an appropriate amount of "persuasion" ![]() Thanx for the replies! ![]() |

If the rap with the mallet allows you to start the car, your starter/solenoid is going kaput....
