Anyone done the Valve cover upgrade? Is it worth it. I have an oil leak somewhere above my SSIs and I'm changing the thermostat o-ring, oil pressure light switch and the breather cover gasket.
According to our host the stock valve covers on my 87' are prone to warping. Won't these Turbo covers have the same problem over time?

I did the upgrade on my 74 S for the same reason. The originals were warped. IMHO it is a good upgrade. The turbo's are heavily reinforced and much less prone to warping. I found used ones that were perfect for a bargain.

73.5 : Just did'em... My wrench had the engine out and he said my covers were so warped it wasn't even funny... Put new turbo covers and it's been bone dry since. They sure look cleaner too ! It's a good upgrade according to any book I've read !

These are available from Eagle Day. However, they're for a 993 (3.6).

With Turbo or non-turbo valve covers, you can flatten them to take the warpage out. It's a simple process with sandpaper on a flat plate. If your top VC is leaking, try this flattening approach before you go and buy new ones.

I took my upper mag covers to machine shop that milled it down 1 mm (the amount of warpage) for ~$40, a bit cheeper than new covers....

Jerry: Yes, I told them (him) that it probably was magnesium (I think they are original, dont know what the turbo looks like). He didnt flinch.
I dont think fire is an issue, people heat thier mag cases to remove bolts and studs and I have not seen any comments on burning parts. Or is there a risk for disaster heating mag-parts with an open flame?

Gon fix it with me hammer

magnesium will only ignite if it's very very fine powder ( when i wire brushed my case, i tried igniting the powder that came off it , and even that didn't work, probably because it was to contaminated )
magnesium alloy is way to dense to ignite, not even when you put an open flame to it...

They also use coolant for extended milling processes. This would probably help prevent ignition as well.

well, i had sparks coming of my case when i was going nuts with my wirebrush... but nothing that could be considered ignition

I've been to mag engine fires. It's a pia. If a small hand line putting out 180gpm doesn't do it then the foam is used or purple-K.
Had one ignite in the owners garage. The foam had the whole house smelling like low tide. We didn't smell like roses either. Do not under estimate mag

Mine were slightly warped, so I went the silicon gasket route and it has worked so far. It hasn't been long though.
