OT: Funny story at the LA All Euro show - Tyson
I'm in the process of upgrading my '70 911 to a 3.2 and was looking for miscellaneous engine parts at the All Euro show. One of the vendors had what appeared to be the engine/oil reservoir crossover line. I kneeled over and was inspecting the parts, I asked the vendor what year car they came from but he didn't know. A person kneeled over next to me and ask me what year car I had and why I was looking at those oil lines. I said "I have an early 911". He asked if it was a '72? I said "no"... he said, "those lines are for a '72". He explained what the difference was on the '70 and '72 in regards to a 3.2 engine. At first, I wasn't sure I was going to believe some random guy who "appeared" to know about Porsches... could he be giving me some bull about the lines so he could buy them himself?
He then said, "I'm a mechanic and work on Porsches", I said "Oh yeah... what shop do you work for?" He then said "TRE", I then followed by "Is your name Tyson?" he said "Yes..." Enough said. After talking a bit more about my project in general (RSR clone), I walked away and was 100% those lines wouldn't have fit my car. Thanks Tyson, it was nice meeting you and appreciate the info you shared. - Fernando |

Heh heh, yeah you did give me kind of a funny look at first.
![]() BTW, I should have given you a tip on your 3.2-into-'70 chassis swap. You either need a later tank, (requires cutting your R/R inner fender well) or you need to keep your '70 engine mounted oil cooler and swap it onto the 3.2. The '73 and later cars used a rubber "S" shaped hose and clamps for the suction line from tank to cooler. The '71 and earlier used screw-on fittings. Of course, '72 has it's own deal. As far as the scavenge lines go, (what you were looking at at the swap meet) the early cars like yours simply used a long flex hose that was routed over the bell housing and back to the oil tank. But if you want to update and add an auxiliary cooler, you should use the '74 scavenge lines and t-stat mounted in front of the RR tire. Go to Elephant Racing .com for some detailed schematics of the various systems broken down by year.

After the show, on my way down to San Diego, I stopped by Doug Weirenga's house and realized (after looking at his engine bay), I did in fact needed to cut my RR inner fender for my 3.2 oil tank. I still have the '70 oil tank and thought I could use it, but I don't have the '70 engine oil cooler.
Just today, I posted a WTB and Kevin (KevinP73) replied... part was bought and should be on hand to weld this weekend. Thanks again for info... |

Fernando,
I think we were standing in front of Eade's green RSR-clone (or was it Stephen's orange lightweight RS?), talking about your oil cooler project. Sorry I got distracted with a friend I hadn't expected to see. My apoologies. I would have enjoyed chatting more. Best wishes on your project. Sometimes these take longer to complete than expected, but just plug away at it. Sherwood http://members.rennlist.org/911pcars |

This board is outstanding as a resource for information. Even better, there are some great people too.

Fernando - Tyson is one of the greatest resources on this board. In fact, Tyson has helped me so much, he's in my will to take over my existing Porsche budget. I know, I know - $5 bucks ain't much, but WTF, it's a sixer of Miller, right?

It is truly a small world, especially when you are talking Porsches in SoCal!
Fernando, Tyson, Sherwood and Wayne have all given me great advice, on multiple occassions - you are talking to the right folks! Good story! AND Good luck with the project! Thanks for stopping by on Sunday. Doug Wierenga

I spoke with Tyson briefly yesterday. Jeremy, too. Saw Dave drive by. All great people. All very, very knowledgeable. It's a rarity to have all this talent and be as easy going as these guys are.
Tyson refuses to see things only as they are. He is always seeing what they could be. Dave's inovations speak for themselves. Need a part? Call Jeremy. |

Sherwood, it was nice meeting and talking with you, we were standing by the green RSR. In fact, I was by the green RSR most of the day
![]() I recognized Wayne in the mix of people, but didn't get a chance or have a good excuse to introduce myself. If I had the chance again, I would let you know that I've been a loyal customer for many years and respect and admire what you've done with Pelican Parts. It's a great place to shop and the forum is invaluable for the Do It Yourselfer. Thank you. |

O.K., you're right I'm busted. That was while lapping the 'Ring. Thank God for the power steering of the C2, or the wheel might have slipped from my knees.
