Fuel tank install - gasket or RTV?
I'm finally ready to get the fuel cell mounted in the car this weekend. I am using the bottom 1/2 of a factory tank as the base for a mounting perch for the cell and was thinking about using a thick bead of RTV Silicon around the mounting flange of the tank when I install it rather than the factory foam seal. My thinking is that it might help to bond the tank to the car a little rather than just be a crush seal like the factory foam. I've also added 2 additional hold-downs to the 3 factory locations. Has anyone done this before or does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions as to why or why not do this?

Only thing I can think of is that the foam may allow for leaking fuel, etc. to seep out of the car, rather than puddle inside. RTV would seal it up tight. Maybe add a drain hole or two at the bottom of the tank. Just a thought ...

The tank is actually cut in half holds no fuel. The fuel will be in a Fuel Safe Cell that is mounted on/in the lower portion of the factory tank. If that has a leak - I've got bigger problems!!

The OEM foam is nice stuff. I would imagine it'll absorbs shock much better than RTV, if that really matters.
