Save the Date: Pelican Parts 917 Engine Open House with Special Guest: BRIAN REDMAN!!
Save the date - just got off the phone with former Gulf Porsche 917 factory driver Brian Redman, and we've confirmed our open house date - Saturday, March 25th, 2PM. This will be an event to kick off the silent auction process of the 917 & 908 engines! Brian will be there telling stories, and signing autographs. We'll have refreshments and a few surprises as well!
We're planning on making this a big event, with carvans starting from the north and south (meet at TRE in the morning maybe? Or Crystal Cove?). It should be a fun-filled afternoon - Brian is a great story-teller, I hear! Unfortunately, this conflicts with some other events going on (it was the only time that Brian was available). The California Festival of Speed, and the Ultimate Pelican Meet in Vegas. I'm sad that I'm constricted to this date, but there's not much that I can do about it. We're all VERY excited about this event - more details will come in the near future. This is aiming to be *the* talked about Porsche event of the year! -Wayne http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1141255024.jpg |
And the date is????
|
Oops!

Damn west coast guys have all the fun.
|
Whats the address?
|
Pelican Parts is found at:
120 Standard St El Segundo CA 90245 (the town between LAX and Manhattan Beach) |
Consider the date saved. :)
|
Bit of a drive from * Buffalo *, NY :(
...... tell Brian that Wil Ferch sez "Hello"...hope to see him at the Glen in Fall. - Wil |
*bump*
|
I'll take a second dose of 12 cylinder...
Also I have been wanting to get Brian's autograph on my helmet. It will look good right next to Vic Elfords! |
Sounds like I may have to swing another trip out west !! Nicely done Wayne !
I suppose you're having it catered by the local Hooters grid girls too... |
120 Standard St
El Segundo CA 90245 any small airports near? want to pick 3 people up who are flying from from AZ? |
On the calender and have the OK from the powers that be.
Anyone coming from the north can PM me and we can work on a meeting place(s) between Santa Barbara and Pelican. |
air-cool-me:
The Torrance airport is not to far, about 35-45 minutes away from them. It's located in Rancho Palos Verdes, just south of the Redondo area. Crenshaw to I-405 to Century Blvd toward the airport basically... edit: whoops! my bad.. I was just out there staying in RPV (up the hill) and flew around a couple of times out of Torrance. Thanks for the correction. |
Or Hawthore airport is a few miles away.
As for Torrance, it is one large block off of PCH in Torrance (not RPV) and is about 8 miles from Pelican straight off PCH/Sepulveda and El Segundo Blvd. Very easy from Torrance to El Segundo... |
LAX is right next door to Pelican but I wouldn't call it a small airport.
|
yea... ... looking for smaller then that!
i will check out Torrance. thanks alot. |
We'll wait for more details to confirm, but we should be in as well. Will be nice to have a run before the event as well.
Does anybody think that Brian might know about the next Rennsport Reunion??? |
Wayne:
Do I understand correctly, the engines in your pic are up for auction? Where did these beauties come from? j.p. |
J.P.,
The story of the engines is here: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/261388-stolen-porsche-917-motors-recovered.html |
I need to be there. Crystal Cove? Sounds like fun. What the parking situation like?
|
Jeez, I thought I'd had enough coffee.
I meant - What's the parking like in El Segundo? |
Wayne,
Thanks for the second photo op. I will have a new Digital cam in tow. It would be nice if someone would bring a 908 or 917 to this event (Driver, Engines, And 908s/917s equals one big photo op). TRE Groupa Leader (D), Will there be a non-sanctioned Street Group Rally for this event? Thanks, Larry |
Yes, we're going to have groups start at TRE (maybe), and also near Crystal Cove, for the journey up north...

Brian Redman is absolutely a great guy. He sponsors a number of vintage racing events, one of which is at Summit Point (Jefferson 500). At one recent Jeff 500, Pelican DougE strikes up a conversation with Brian as he's walking past us in the paddock (we're Jase007's 356 pit crew). Doug pulls out his scrap book of racing events he's attended and hands it to Brian. Brian sits down and proceeds to flip through the scrap book, talking to us about the various car's histories and his experiences with them. This went on for maybe half an hour. Fantastic! It was this gearhead's favorite spectator experience at the track.
You left coast guys must make it to Wayne's event! |
We are starting a group here at our shop. We think 12 noon is a decent time to leave from the shop- with a small mountain road excursion on the way. Refreshments will be served - welcome to all to drop in starting around 10:30 am to talk shop and visit. please rsvp to info@tremotorsports.com so we have an estimate on how many people to prepare for

Todd (Nostatic) just left Vegas heading for LA about 9:30 this morning. He is not sure how his timing will be or if he can make the meeting there.
Kim was supposed to leave at 0700 this morning and head to LA for the meeting as well. She should be arriving anytime if everything went as planned. Have fun everyone! Joe A |
How about some semi-live pictures and commentary during the “EVENT” posted here for us poor sots East of the mountains or around the world.
Make it an on-line event also. Best, Grady |
Hey Jim - yup, I remember that day like it was yesterday ... I still kick myself for not having video/audio taped the conversation because his first hand knowledge of the historically significant factory cars was stunning.
The referenced scrapbook was actually all my pictures from RRII which happened to be about a month before the annual Jeff 500 that year. Having attended the Jeff 500 for about the past 10 years I knew Brian was going to be there so I was hoping I'd get a chance to show him a few of the pics and get an autograph on a couple of them. Sure enough I run into him, ask him if he has a minute and he joins us in Jason's pit area and proceeds to flip through every page of the pictures and talks about his experience/knowledge of each of the cars. Once finished we then get on the subject of RRI vs. RRII and then the topic of RRIII :) Brian is one of the sports true gentlemen with an incredible racing past. Anyone who has the chance to meet him and listen to him talk will not be disappointed. Enjoy the event and us East Coasters look forward to the pics/write-ups ! |

The 917 is a much smaller car than it seems in pictures. It's amazing that it carries such a huge engine. Brian Redman is the gentleman in the suit with his hands in his pockets standing in front of the 917. His stories were incredible and delivered with typical British understated humor. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1143341505.jpg Look how low it sits. If you sit down on the ground you will be at about the same height above the ground as the driver of one of these. That's low! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1143341673.jpg The ride home following planeguy67's beautiful 993 http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1143341834.jpg |
Great pics Jack. Thanks for posting. Can't believe you got a photo of us behind the blue truck! Your first photo finally confirms that my spoiler really does deploy at speed.
We'll have to get a SoCal run together for the re-emergence of BBII v.2. |
Some of Mr. Redman's stories about his injuries were horrific. I'm glad I'm only an enthusiast, and not a pro driver. That Jim Hall Chapparal recount about the car flipping over was just nuts.

Good to see you again, Kevin...everyone else too, btw.
