Buy "101 Projects for the Porsche 911" - written by Wayne Dempsey the host of this forum. You can order it online here, or find it in a local bookstore.

Otherwise, a search of the forum achives will likely yield several posts on oil changes and what to watch out for.

The number one piece of advice is to use a very very large container to catch the oil. A lot of oil comes out and very quickly. A large oil drain pan with a small hole in the center won't do it since the small hole won't be able to keep up with the flow of oil. I think an SC can hold about 11 quarts in sump, lines, filter, and tank - but don't quote me on that.

Use new crush washers for the tank and sump drain plugs. Change the filter.

Partially refill with the car on a flat surface and then check the oil level in the tank with a warm running engine and finish refilling. You want to be sure that the oil has circulated while being VERY cautious of overfilling - which will create a huge mess.

Wayne's book will cover this in much better detail and you'll have info for 100 other projects when you're done.

1. Get a big catch bin (12 quart capacity), 12 quarts of oil, oil filter (not FRAM), crush washers and rags.
2. Drain the oil tank.
3. Drain the sump.
4. Remove and drain the oil filter.
5. Put on new crush washer and replace the sump drain plug.
6. Same for oil tank drain plug.
7. Fill new filter with oil and install.
8. Put in 9 quarts of oil.
9. Start engine and make sure oil light goes out within a few seconds (if it does not, shut down immediately). Let engine run for a few minutes. Check for leaks.
10. If no leaks and oil lights go out, go for a drive bringing two quarts with you and rags.
11. Once engine is hot, park on a level spot and check oil level with dipstick (engine must be running).
12. If needed fill to between the two level markings on stick.

Some folks say to warm engine before draining.
Some folks say to pull the coil wire before starting to build oil pressure then re-attach it and start engine.
Over filling can be as bad as underfilling. Having 9 quarts in (plus what is in oil filer) will get you close.
