Rear Valence Damage, Replace or Rework? (Pics)

What do you all think about this? Buy a new one and paint to match? Or pound on this a little and see how well I can touch it up?

BTW, I have no experience with this type of work.

Thanks!

That should be quite an easy fix - pound it a bit and see! Well, OK maybe not so much pound as lightly tap, I should add!

Thanks guys, that is what I was hoping. I know the paint code and name, what type of paint do I need to do this work? Touch-up, can of enamel?

I would replace it. Mine was about like that and after pounding and bending by hand for hours it still didn't look right. The part and seal was only about $150 bucks and I picked up the paint ($15) to spray on it this spring.

With the valance off I decided to put on a dual outlet muffler so I cut the valance. Now I'm just waiting for the weather to break so I can paint it.

Easy enough!

Good Luck!

I picked it up at Finish Masters. I was going to use their rattle can attachment, but decided to get out my own gun and compressor. All you have to do is scuff up the new valance, spray the paint, and install.

That sheet metal is so flimsy you can just reach down with your hand and pull it back out. Save the $150 for something else.

One last question, Am I a single stage paint?
1985 Color Code 673-9-2 marmorgrau. Or should I do a clearcoat as well? Doesn't have to be perfect I assume single stage would work fine?

Single stage, no clearcoat.

Don't quote me on this, but I'm pretty sure the paint I got was enamel. I'd have to check the can when I get home. I'm not putting on a clear coat.

Be aware that behind the valence is a heat shield that is pretty strudy. When you pull out the valence, be sure to keep/ensure that the heat shield is also put back into shape.

I've got the exact same probelm with my 87' Targa. I was going to remove the valence. Is it possible to remove the valance and not the whole bumper?

It is possible to remove the valence without removing the whole bumper. Not all 911s have a heat shield; my '84 did, but most others I know do not. I don't see a need for paint there. It looks like a simple fix without extensive bodywork needed. A little massaging should fix that valence. Good luck!

I can find a picture, but I don't have a rear valence and most people don't notice. It's just the center piece on the bottom.

I would try to pull it out while in place like Kurt said. You might try to tap out the little dent with a small hammer. The valence can be removed however, easily. Poke your head underneath, and you will find that it is bolted or screwed to the underside of the bumper - no biggie.

$150 will buy you a nice pedal set, a Bentley manual and Waynes book, or loads of other cool stuff.

Looks like a dent to me, not a "damage". Why not spend a weekends to try it yourself before spendng money on a new one.
