930 clutch noise

Hey guys I was coming back from a P-event yesterday and when I down shifted to third took, the RPM up to 4k to go heavy on boost I got a clunking sound as I up-shifted to 4th at 6k rpm.

My car is a 86 turbo with 27k miles. I was told that the previous owner had replaced the clutch.... not sure when it was changed.

I plan to lift the car, support the rear suspension so I can run/shift the car and isolate the noise. Any issues with this approach.. I plan to have the drive axles as close to horizontal.. should I have the wheels off??

Any ideas what might have gone wrong with the clutch to make this noise? bad friction plate spring, throwout out bearing, etc.

Thoughts ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks

Can you find documentation regarding the clutch replacement? Or is the PO giving you this info verbally? As for running the car with the wheels off the ground, I guess it could be done, BUT IT SOUNDS SCARY AT BEST! I'm sure race teams do this. I would never attempt this, personally. I'm reminded of the infamous flying Ferrari in Farris Bueler as it slipped off the jack and took a dirt nap in the trees and ground below!!!!

My clutch story in my '87 was that the OEM rubber centered clutch disc disintegrated as I was accelerating hard under full boost. The car had 42k when it happened. The engine went quickly to red-line with no power to the wheels! I replaced it with the spring centered disc used on the early turbo cars. However, after this brief encounter with red-line, my car never ran the same and I'm now in the middle of a total engine rebuild!
