Proper way to close the trunk?
 

This is probably a very minor technical question but what is the proper way to close the trunk? I've seen a couple different methods including pushing on the emblem and pushing on the outer corners.

Just looking to avoid denting the trunk lid.

No pressure on the emblem...never... this causes forces on the underlying hold-down pins of the crest and they can break over time.

Finger pressure a few inches from....and on both sides of.... the crest.....

I use outer corners....less chance of causing a depression in the middle of your hood....Never use the crest

i prefer a jackhammer, however i find it a pain to carry along a compressor big enough to power it, so for on the road, i simply use a big sledge hammer... either way , it's a big improvement over my old method of stomping on it with my snakeskin boots...

The sledge might be a little rough on the paint.

My wife did witness a lady use her foot on the emblem of her 996 cab to close it. Apparently it wouldn't close because the trunk was stuffed with items from Bed Bath & Beyond.

look at the bottom and find where the latch would be if it came thru to the top surface...put both hands next to & on top of that to spread the force & lower the pressure - avoid the crest itself.

see, that would be wrong, 996's have a different latch mechanism
stomping them is not correct, the right way to close the 996 hood, is to do a wrestler drop with the elbow down

as you can see, the 996 is totally not scared or confused by the wrestler, it was designed and built by Germanz, and endured quality bash testing by 3 bad bavarians in lederhosen... not at all much different from a wrestler, just heavier

You need to get on the freeway, find an 18-wheeler or a school-bus, get behind it and rear-end it with at least 20MpH speed delta. That'll shut any hood alright no matter if long-hood, SC, Carrera, or even the tougher 996 crowd.

The manual sez push on the corners, never the center. Goes for the deck lid as well.

Trick is in any method to BE GENTLE:)

I lift it up a foot or 2, and slam it down. The 2 rubber cromets on the corners take care of it. No dent, no scratch. No hurt.

There is a lot of seal to be compressed .. .so I could see why pressing along the outer front edge would work well . . . if you don't have your lederhosen handy.

Maybe you're kidding but I've seen people do that (slam them down) working the Tech line (pre track inspection) who didn't know any better.

The main reason not to do it is that the male part of the latch on these cars can get so out of adjustment that it misses the "ramp" on the latch receiver that is supposed to guide it into the latch mechanism. When that happens it bends the latch backwards on itself.

I press the lid down with my open hand over the latch and then pull up on edge of the lid with my finger tips to make sure it is latched.
