Another Flowmaster muffler option: Hushpower II on the side
After postponing my turbo project, I needed an inexpensive muffler option that would go with my rear end diet. I cut off my pre-muffler, and put a Flowmaster Hushpower II stainless muffler on the side. While this muffler is not light, (about 10 lbs), it is much lighter than stock, it eliminates the pre-muffler or cat, and the weight is moved forward.
If you put a heat shield on it, it might pass for a cat for smog visual inspection. The sound is very deep, almost V8 like. Even my wife likes it. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1141600320.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1141600337.jpg I will attempt to include sound files. (It was hard to keep the cheep microphone from distorting.) http://us.f13.yahoofs.com/bc/43c75e9cm72392e57/bc/hosted/Flowmaster_idle.wav?BC5u2CEBPhIuiknv http://us.f13.yahoofs.com/bc/43c75e9cm72392e57/bc/hosted/driving.wav?BCZU3CEBkzVqF26j |
Also the diet included:
Removed rear crash bumper and pads etc. (replace with fiberglass) Removed reflector, and cut out mount. Cut off bumper shock mounts. Removed heater blower and install backdate from Thom Fitzpatrick. Removed side rocker covers. Installed aluminum pressure plate. Lightened gears. Replaced cab motor mount with coupe one. Engine moved 1” forward with aluminum spacer. The change in how the car feels is incredible! Believe what they say about adding lightness! Here are pictures of my motor spacer. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1141600722.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1141600749.jpg |
The spacer looks good. Did you need to fabricate one for the tranny mount?
I am always puzzled about the movement of the egine by 1"! I know a lot of people have done it but could not see any details (for example, long term issues, cv joint issues, transmissin adjustments, etc.). Heck, I could even be interested in buying replicas of your parts. Could you elaborate? Thanks. |
Actually the 1" movement is also a mystery to me as well. I did not do the engine swap in this car. The car also has a suspension swap, but I can’t tell if something was changed at the transmission. Originally it had cabriolet motor mounts, and the 1” shift was on the ends of the mount bar. This was OK with the beefy cab mount, but would put a twist on the wimpy coupe mount. By putting the spacer in, there is no extra stress on the cross piece.
I don’t know if it is common to move the engine forward with a 3.2 swap. I think I’ve read that Jack Olson’s engine is moved 2” forward, but that’s a 3.6. The spacer was cut on my CNC, so I could make more. |
