I've been thinking about trying to make my rear decklid more "R" like...getting rid of the chrome grill and replacing it with an expanded metal mesh of some kind, as well as getting rid of the lettering. I'd love to see some examples of this from you guys and gals.
Also, I have a decklid from a '67 912 that I'm thinking about using because it has the middle brace built into it. Will this fit my '70 w/o any problems? My understanding is the rear deck lids are pretty much all interchangable. If I don't use it, anybody know what it's worth if I put it on eBay? Thanks! ![]()

I'll even start with my own example...but I'd love to see more (and with more detail). Thanks again!

It will work and look right for an R style lid. Most lids seem to go for about $100 on ebay that is unless they are made of aluminum.

I'll post a better pic form the car above when I get home from work. That grill cost me $10 to make. Also, I got the idea from Emory and one day was flipping through a book with some vintage photos and saw the exact same grill.

Thanks Bob, I love the look. Did you just get expanded metal and cut it to shape?
Interestingly, I've been doing a little searching of my archives and I'm surprised at how many proper race cars still have the factory grill, etc. Is there really an advantage to one over the other? (..factory grill or simplified/modified?)

I bought the most beat up 3 bar grill, removed all the rails, painted it black, turned it upside down and mounted it. So it's officially a porche part. I thought it important it retain the porsche style screen rather than purchase an aftermarket screen from an import store.

Doug - You aren't going to do this just for cosmetics, right??
You need to use a FG deck lid first. A woven wire mesh or expanded wire mesh in Al is the next wt. reduction step (unless you use ext. hinges). The one somebody posted with a rubber surround on it looked great.

Doug - this picture is from the book Porsche 911 65-71 by Brian Long. The caption reads "Waldegaards's car looking worse for wear at the end of the 1970 Monte."
I think Waldegaard strictly did it for "cosmetics". ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Dart sells a CF one that ways like 4 lbs. Then add expanded Al grill and some Ti R style hinges for serious weight loss. This plus the rear end lift at speed and you'll probably take off!

Doug,
I'm glad you brang this up. I am having a hard time finding the correct expanded metal grill for my project. I checked all the hardware stores and Home depot's in my area and they dont have the correct hole size or directional pattern. Bob mentioned he used the metal mesh from an original grill, however I just took a look at mine and it has 5 indentations for the mounting bars. If I use my old mesh it will not lay flat against the inside of the engine lid. It would not look good. Please help! ![]()

I'm not sure what the correct size, etc. is. But I was going to find something from McNichols ( http://www.mcnichols.com/ ) and just use that. They seem to have everything we might need...

I checked with http://www.mcnichols.com/ and they
do not have the correct diamond pattern that matches in aluminum, stainless or steel. Does anyone have any more input?

I'll bet Home Depot or Lowe's has something. I know a small metal place here has it. You might have to search, but you are close to center of industrial activity in the US - bound to be around...

I had a crappy old beat up aluminum rear grill given to me. So I popped the aluminum slats off and painted it black. It has a great "vintage" race look to it. Plus it is VERY light.

That's what Thrown Hammer did with his. I like the look and I can do that with mine (because it's a bit beat up as well).
Has anybody done a silver grill on a darker car? My brown won't dissappear for quite a while...
