Rump raised and ready, she whispered...
She wasn’t the best looker in town; she probably wasn’t the worst. No matter, she was here, now, rump raised and ready. I couldn’t see her face from where I stood, but what I could see was enough. I don’t know if she really spoke or if it was all in my head. What I heard was “What are you waiting for? I’m ready…” I didn’t say anything. Hell, I didn’t have anything to say. I don’t know how long it had been, but long enough for me to not worry about it…too much, anyway.
I touched her flank – maybe she shivered, maybe she didn’t. Since she seemed like she’d been here more than once, I guessed she didn’t. Sure, she’d seen some miles…and probably more than her share of rough hands. I didn’t care – who would? All I knew was somehow we’d gotten to where we were now and that was good enough for me. “Listen” she said, “Just take it slow and easy for now and later…” I said ‘Yea?” “Later”, she said, “we can go…fast…” I’d heard my share of broken promises, so later meant next to nothing to me; but, still… “C’mon”, she whispered, “Let’s do it”. I said nothing, and moved closer… (With apologies and remembrances to Mickey Spillane) Cheers, Jim
