Heater smells like Onions!

Sounds stupid, but when i turn my heater on, it smells like cooked onions.

My wife thinks so too, just to make sure i am not crazy....

I read about a gas smell coming out when the heater is turned on, but not onion smell....

Any ideas?

Do you have rodents in your area? Its not uncommon for rats/mice to fill your heat exchangers with food for the winter so to speak. They get in through the heater valves going into the chassis. Maybe you should have a look see and see what you find in the exchangers. I've found dog food in mass quantities amoungst other things.

Was the car originally delivered to France? ;)

Call Tom and Ray: Car Talk. This type of question is right up their alley!
Unfortunately, a quick search of their site only came up with Tom and Ray's Somewhat Famous Saukerkraut Pierogi. http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/...s/beerchug.gif

Just throw a steak on a valve cover & it will all come together.

Used to keep my car in a WA barn when I lived in AK. Had this problem lots to include actual burning hair smell from the mice mentioned in previous posts. While red-lining an on-ramp one day burning embers actually shot from the dash vents! Try hooking a shop-vac up to the flex duct(s) in the engine bay and draw air through in the reverse direction from normal. While the vacuum is running go up and move your heater controls through all positions. Works most of the time.
