Air box + Cutout + Rain = ?

Quick question...The previous owner cut out the side of the air box. I'm wondering if this is a bad idea for my "daily driver" as this car will be in all sorts of weather. Can water get in there?

Does the cutout allow air into the engine without going through the filter first?

I had done the same thing to the airbox on my 87 about 4 years ago. Drove it in some pretty bad rain storms and never had an issue.

Mine is cut out also. A little (and I mean a little) water never hurts. On the other hand water is a diesel engines worst enemy.

No, the part he cut out was the cover, so basically the entire airfilter is visible. Eurosport showed me a $150 cover with a rain gutter so that got me thinking that I may have a potential problem with water getting in.

Mine is open....no problems....it has been driven in the rain....you can always get another lid to install in bad weather...

You shouldn't have a problem unless the car is submerged.

No issues with water. As a matter of fact many of the hot rodders use water injection systems to reduce the chances of detonation.

Good to know, that makes me feel much better. The car got a good soaking on the drive to work today and I was a bit worried.

Thanks,
Dan

Ok, explain where the water goes if the car is sitting outside in a soaking rain storm. Some of it has to go into the air holes which then allows it into the airbox. This potentially goes into the fuel injection system. A moving car presents a different scenario.

The airbox in an 87 is close to the firewall. Water shouldn't touch it if the car is sitting out in the rain. My airbox never got wet when I washed the car.

No water droplets are going to get past the air filter, just moist air. Like driving in Houston in the summer.

dear wil thanks for the tip, i am still new and will use this in the future. you are a wizard..........a true star! what will it take for you to move in for 2 months and help me prep mine for PCA showroom stock, so as to not make any DUMB ASS mistakes, that will cost money, time ,effort, lap times, or loss of points to stay stock and not be busted by the PCA TECH GODS! going out the 25th of march to PIR w/AZRA who is much more lenient than PCA, to just get feel for track and car. been real leerrryyyy of instant HP gains from some vendors, especially after reading some of these blogs. i really appreciate your wisdom. and as i get older i really have to wonder if some of these gizmo's were so good..............WHY DIDNT THE FACTORY DO IT IN THE FIRST PLACE! thanks chuck

Air filter will get dirtier quicker - replace twice a year in lieu of once a year.
