My butt is finally shaved!
Well as one of the winter projects we removed the bumpr, removed the big ugly bumperettes, filled in all the holes with Al via the MIG.
After all the holes were filled I mocked up the bumper shocks, measuring for centers. I aquired some Al studs and drilld and tapped the now plugged original mounting holes for the studs. Leaving the studs just a tad recessed again plug welded the studs into the material. We then knocked out the studs on the bumper shocks and drilled them out by one size. After a few shmears of filler, using Evercoat Extreme from Eastwood a lot of sanding, primer and sanding and then painting, paint from Paintscratch........it's done. I'm going to use a lit license plate frame for the plate and illumination. The best part is loosing about 22 lbs! ![]()

Looks awesome, this is on my to-do list. Save some weight, clean the looks, and keep crashworthiness. Sounds like a win!
Any pics from the underside?

Dave, thanks.... it was a fair amount of work sinced we stripped it down to bare metal.
The pics from the work were accidently deleted from my camera, this is what happens when your daughter and youself have the same cameras! I will take pics again, I want to drop the bumper soon to do some other work and it would be better to have the bumper off. I'll add to the post then.

Not too cahnge the subject but you do know that McSorley's bottles their brew don't you? Me and the Mrs stopped in for a bite in Bayridge Fri nite and the pub carries McSorley's ON TAP!

How hard is it to remove the bumper when you need to? how do you do it? Again, looks amazing. I think there is a shop in MA that will do this if you drop off your bumper for close to $1000, which I'll bet given the amount of work necessary is worth it.

Dave, the bumper comes off in about 20 min. On an SC or Carrera it's a matter of.....
removing the rub strips, pop out the plugs on the rubber strip and unscrew, a nut behind and it's off. Next is 4 8mm nuts that hold the bellows to the bumpers. Then 4 little screws for the license plate lights on the big ugly bumperettes, disconnect the spade connections for the lights. Remove the bumperettes, there are 3 nuts behind the bumper. That then exposes the nuts for the bumper proper, 4 nuts. And it's off. $1000 seems very high for a job like this. Maybe I should go into business! Scooter...I'm working on fabricating a fill strip for the front for the same smooth look. I'll post when that project is under way.

great job! Wasn't there another thread like this but the guy even welded the extension on too? It looked like a RS bumper but in OE steel.
Anyone have the link?

Thanks.

Asjac.... in total (bumperettes, rubber strips) weigh in at 22 lbs.
rnln......I'll be using a lighted license plate frame. Bigrubber.....I'm thinking of doing that mod to the extensions. I've got a full metal fabrication shop at my disposal so it should not be too difficult. I might make a pattern and produce some. Thanks to all for the kind words!

Looks good! I did mine just recently, much cleaner sleeker look...
If you fabricate those extensions I bet you could sell quite a few. I saw an old post where a guy did this and it turned out really nice. I would love to have a pair for front and rear.

I'm just looking at doing this too however I think I have decided to keep the rubber strips.
I do think it looks nicer without but where I live and sometimes park I know it will get the off nudge and scrape and I think the rubber strips will take that a little better than a smooth painted bumper. I also think that unless you are going to remove the rubber off the front too it can look a little wierd. I think I'm going to use some of these for the number plate lights - I think done right they will look ok. ![]() Uk supplier of light bolts
