Mount for door checker

Has anyone had the mount for the door checker break? My driver's side door closes fine but when I open it the door opens almost 90deg. Today I just noticed the rattling from it being broken. Can a plate be welded in the door to mount the door checker or would you guys bother?

Now that I know the proper name used on this board the search did wonders. How is the repair kit held in place without welding? I am thinking of having a piece of plate metal welded in. What are your recommendations?

There is usually enough metal left around the hole to hold the reinforcement kit. One piece goes on the inside of the hole and one on the outside to sandwich it. The bolts hold everything together. Check out the pictures in the links I posted..and the ones that are linked to in the post..like the one below. There are pictures
Door stay problem

Welding would be even better, but would be much more difficult/expensive IMHO.

Finstone: Thank you for your knowledge. You have been the common link in all the old threads I have read minus the other threads you have given me. How thick are the reinforcement metal plates? My door stay is a stud/nut type not a bolt in like I have seen with some of the other photos. Will it be thin enough for me to use my original stay?

I just had this done a week ago. I gave the parts (repair kit and new stay) to my mechanic (dealer experience for 25+ years and more) and he started to work on it. It turned out that the metal was really bad (kind of obvious but I was hoping), and he ended up having to weld inside the door. You cannot see it after the work is done.

He did mention that it was difficult to work and weld and removing the door skin would have been a better option. Since the door is perfect otherwise, I am glad he was able to finish it going from the inside.

Good luck.

The replacement plates are quite thick. Generally speaking, the door does not tear unless the stay is worn out. If that is the case, you will tear out the repair eventually unless you replace the stay. The new stay comes with bolts and nutplates. Although the standard bolts will work, the preferred solution is to use the plated allen bolts. They are much easier to install IMHO. See below
