SOLUTION for UPLOAD PHOTO error / solid black image
 

Here's a simple fix for the black images which are caused by files larger than 2M.

If using Internet Explorer, right click on the photo. Select open with Microsoft Paint. Underneath the image menu select skew / stretch. Use identical reduction (horizontal and vertical) percentages to keep the same proportions within your photo.

TIP: If you cut both #s in half, you reduce the file size to 1/4 roughly of the original size.

Continue reducing until the file size is less than 2M. You can check file size by looking at the file properties (within the file menu) after the file is saved.

I take pictures for Pelican posting by using the PC file size selector on my camera. Specifically it is 1024 x 768, which ends up being 1M to 2M pixels.

I've seen several people addressing the whole image problem so many are having.

If you are unable to purchase photoshop & use the save for web option try this:

It is free & will allow you to resize & export images.

Keep in mind that for most of the stuff we look at on this board 500 to 600 pixels by 5 or 600 pixels is usually plenty large enough. Also, 60% jpeg quality is more than enough. There are a ton of images on the board that are using no compression & are rather large. If you are really anal about putting up a high quality image use 80% jpeg compression. I assure you 95% of the population can't tell the difference between 60% & 80%.

I use a shareware one called "JPeg Image Compressor" that works fantasticlly, especially sizing down to the miniscule avatar size here on Pelican. No affiliation, it's at http://www.winsoftmagic.com/ for $25.00US.

Install

Right click on the file, choose Resize Image, click the 800x600 bullet and let it do it's thing.

I guess what I'm getting at is gimp is as close to a photoshop type app as there is without the $500 price tag. The Big upside is that it has layers & it's free.
