964 / 993 14 - pin engine / chassis connector superceded part or wrong part?
 

My 1971 911 has a '86 chassis harness and I'm in the process of installing a 993 engine in my car. The 14 pin connector on the chassis side broke into many pieces when I was taking it apart. I bought a new one from Pelican, but it was a superceded part.

Here's the problem: The male pins on the chassis harness don't protrude far enough from the new connector.

Can you make out the nubs just sticking out? (This would be a good time for a small peni$ joke, but I'll spare you.)

The side profile of the earlier connector vs. the new one is very different, which accounts for the difference in pin protrusion.

Do I need to resolder new longer pins? OR did I get the wrong connector housing from Pelican?

I think you got the wrong part. I replaced one a year ago and everything worked out OK. The only surprize was one 1/2 is about $5 and the other 1/2 is about $40.Check the other end on the engine to see if you have 2 of the same ends or not.

Thanks for your help! The issue is definitely on the chassis side harness. The engine side is the same exact housing, but female pins are installed and looks just like this photo (pilfered from Pelican archive). You can see the nubs won't make proper contact.

My connector (shown in the first picture) was $10 total. I was also sent 14 female pins to solder in, but that is definitely wrong, because the chassis side has 14 male, not female pins.

Any more thoughts?

I think the part # you need is actually a kit. 911 612 113 05 It comes with the top and bottom pieces as well as the male pins. It has a retail price of $38.07

While you do not show the top of the connector, it seems like you have not installed the pin with the wire leading to the "center" of the connector, which allows for more external pin depth. Could you post a pic of the guts?

The back cover wouldn't install without the pin completely buried in its socket. Once in place, it is retained properly. The wire exits properly towards the center of the connector. If you look at the side profile of the old vs. new connector, the heights are very different, which I think accounts for the difference in pin length.

According to my order, part # 911 612 115 03 was superceded with these three parts:

99965243040 connector cover $2.37
99965243640 connector cover $3.27
pin connector 14 $.50 = $7.00 (these pins are female and obviously not right)

Again, the housing is identical to that on the engine side. Maybe I just need to replace the old male pins with the newer ones, which means resoldering. Not the end of the world.

Anyone simply ordered a new connector and put the pins in the right spot and had it work properly (wihtout soldering new pins in)? Again, my harness is an '86 911.

I do see the much thicker cross section, and from your description it sounds like new longer pins are a must for this to work. FWIW, resoldering these wires into the pins is pretty easy, I did most of them when I put the 3.6 in my '87.

thanks - think that's what I have to do. Just don't have the pins here. Not a lot of work, agreed. This car has no shortage of soldered wires :-)

Was there a solution to this thread? I've discovered the same problem, and cannot get the male pins to protrude enough.
