Hood emblem removal/install

I just got a new emblem for the front. I didn't realize how tight the access is to the speed nuts.

A) whats the easiest way to get the nuts off? I am assuming some long needle nose pliars will be involved.

B) how do I get the speed nuts back on? Looks like they will fit into the end of a socket.

I am only asking because the prospect of losing the nuts in that small space is not a happy thought.

"the nuts in that small space" errrrr.......

I've always used a screwdriver handle that accepts a socket. Never had a problem. A 1/4 extension and socket should work as well.

FWIW, during PCA based Concours (NNJR/Zone 1) it was drilled into our heads that one should very gently bend the badge to conform to the hood contour.

Grrrrrr.....

I poped the thing off by using a screw driver, with a credit card to protect the hood. No problem, except the studs that hold the emblem off broke off. Damn! I REALLY don't want to have to drill this thing out.

You may try to grab from the underside with pliers and twist out. IIRC, the studs are held on by speed nuts.

WOW.

Was THAT a pain in the ass.

The rubber grommet that comes with the emblem does not fit. I was going to ***** to Pelican, but the OEM one the car appears to be the same. wtf?

Save youself some grief and order and extra set of speed nuts. Its well worth the 50 cents.

If you have to do this job, the key is that the emblem is very soft metal. Hold the emblem firmly from above after positioning it. Push the speed nuts on until they get to the metal crip on the back, then twist them on. The soft metal of the stud on the emblem gives way and it self threads on.

A hair dryer and some patience will serve you well here.

No need for pliers. The proper size socket and an extension is what you need. It also helps if the PO did not strip the nuts and post when installing the last emblem.

You stated the answer. Use a socket. As posted previously, the gasket takes some finesse.
