Oil Cooler Options: Factory vs Aftermarket

Hi guys,

I just bought a Mocal 50 row oil cooler which I plan on putting on my front fender (turbo flare). My car was not equipped with any oil piping that went to the front of the car. Anyways I have two possible options and I am not sure which will be better in terms of use and cost.

Should I purchase a stock carrera external pipe or use the Aeroequip lines?

I am going to need to puchase a mocal external thermostat anyways, one of my other questions is, will the factory pipe thread into this? If not I guess my decision is already made.

Also if I am going to use the aeroquip lines how long of peices of the steel braid do I need? I have seen something that said 22-28 feet, but I would like to get an idea of the individual segments I would have to cut? (example: how far are the pieces that go between the thermo to the external cooler each?)

Any input you guys can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

I have one more question as well.

If you use the Aeroquip lines there is both a teflon lined and a rubber lined version. Which one do you use for your oil lines?

I used Elephant's wide-mouth cooler and it has worked well.

Edit, spelling as usual.

I looked into this during this past summer, and I chose stock lines because they shed heat better than flexible lines, route properly (i.e. w/o sagging or extra drilling), and were actually reasonably priced compared to getting flex lines and adapters. I recommend using stock lines and thermostat, or the Elephant Racing lines which are similar to stock only better. My car was also not equipped with any external cooler from the factory and I found hard line install to be straight forward, easy, and very beneficial.

If you use a factory thermostat you won't need the Mocal thermostat. The beauty of the factory pieces is they are well engineered to work properly for a long time. If you add your Mocal cooler to the fender well, you will have to shield it properly from rocks and grime kicked up from the tire, but still allow proper flow. A 28-row brass cooler or Carrera cooler work sufficiently in both these respects. Most people add Mocal type coolers to the front valence where they get best flow and don't need to worry about stones kicked up from the front tire. Elephant Racing, TRE motorsports, and possibly others sell a front panel you can weld in for better ducting for a front mount cooler.
